Five on Friday

It has been a while since I managed to put a Five on Friday post together. Holidaying is such hard work! I am utterly exhausted and can't quite remember who I am. My days are busy and my nights are broken. I have been entertaining the offspring, keeping the chaos and mess in the house at bay, walking the dog and cooking meals and whatnot. The teenager is night-active, getting up multiple times during the night, noisily so. The local foxes are going mad at night, too. I have listened to many radio programmes during the night. Alas, I do try and smile even though at times, I feel more like hiding under the kitchen table.

I am joining Amy at Love Made My Home for a lightening fast roundup of news.

::  Packing. We are off to Cornwall later today. I am so so exited. Tomorrow I will be putting my feet up outside our caravan and enjoy the views. Weather permitting. The kitchen table in the caravan is too small to hide under anyway.

::  Choosing a crafty project to take away with me. I was going to do some hexagon paper piecing (as seen here) but I can't face cutting fabric in a rush. I am going to knit instead. I am taking a cardigan WIP I have been working on for ages and a bag of dk remnants to make a colourful stripey raglan pullover for James.

::  Helping Annie sew a top. She used the same pattern I have used three times myself, the Fancy Tiger Saylor Top (here and here for example). The fabric (blue with small white anchors) was a disappointment, it faded in places during the pre-wash. It also feels a bit stiff and it was not easy to push pins through. Still, the top looks lovely and I am well pleased for Annie. It suits her very well. I was going to take a photo but I am in the dog's house just now for one or the other thing I have done wrong.

:: Booking accommodation in London for the October holiday. I left this to Richard because he used to live in London and knows his way around. We wanted to go to Turkey to meet my aunt and mum but the airlines do really know how to make a family of six unhappy. I do so hate it how holiday companies make a huge profit on those who have to travel during school holidays. Flight prices are sky high one week before and after the holiday, just in case. The big kids are exited to go back to London (the little ones haven't been).

::  Walking down Byres Rd in peace and quiet. Sam was entertaining the little ones in the park so the girls and I could indulge ourselves for a few minutes of window shopping. I did wake Sam up today. He lost a day he says. Tuesday apparently. He couldn't believe it was Thursday today. We met up at Nardini's for ice cream. The biggest dilemma was deciding on two ice cream flavours. Amaretti cherry? Wild strawberry? Lemon cheese cake? Bananrama? Kiwi sorbet? Belgian chocolate? Sharing is not an option because for some reason my children are obsessed with germs and the necessity for absolutely not mixing individual germ faunas. Sharing would require two dozen plastic ice cream spoons at least...

Some housekeeping: I have been meaning to change my blog header for a while. I finally did. I am not sure if I like it as much as the last one but it might grow on me. I also added a Twitter button in the side bar. I have tweeted 16 times in three years but you just never know, I might tweet a little more in the future. Do you use Twitter?

I have a few 'canned' posts ready for you and I hope to publish those while we are away. Enjoy!

Finally, a very warm welcome to all my new followers! I am glad you found me here. I'll try and visit your virtual oasis over the next few weeks and say hello. A great big thank you also to all those of you who list my blog on your blogroll. I really appreciate it.. When I get back, I shall overhaul my own blogroll. I will.

The photos by the way are from a recent walk around the Loch Ardinning Nature Reserve near Glasgow.

Cheerio for now! Christina xx

  1. Great post Christina. I took paper piecing on holiday and loved working with it. I cut my fabric very quickly (and badly) the night before we left into very rough squares . Have a grata holiday in Cornwall! The new header is very colourful, I think I prefer it to your old one slightly. I don't tweet, but I do Instagram. X

  2. Lovely post Christina, I'm glad you found the time to share. I hope you have a lovely time here in Cornwall, weathers good at the moment, but as I used to say to my kids, it doesn't matter if it rains on the beach you are going to get wet in the sea anyway. x

  4. What a lovely time of it you are having. I am so sorry that airfare is so high you can't see your Mum. I want to fly to see my daughter but the prices scare me so.

  11. Have a wonderful holiday. Shame about the price hike around the school holidays on flights its making it almost impossible for some families to travel, which is such a shame as I feel it is educational. I always used to take my girls out of school but these days I believe you get fined.

  17. I can't remember your old header, but then I have trouble remembering my name most days. The new one is very nice although I've forgotten it too already. I don't use Twitter. I really can't be bothered learning something else. Ditto Instagram.
Hope you have a lovely holiday, I'm very impressed by the canned posts! Very organised! We go away next week too. Can't wait :)

  20. Ha, teenagers - just when you think sleep disruption is a thing of the past! I used to lie awake waiting for our son to come in when nightclubs were discovered in S6. Or I would go to sleep and if I woke up at 3 am and he wasn't in yet I would like awake until I heard the door.
I am on Twitter to follow the TdF. My children think it's hysterically funny that I'm on Twitter. I will follow you. I think I've sent 3 or 4 tweets. I 'like' things on other tweets. That's as near to Facebook as I'll ever get. I do have Instagram but am just practising just now!
Lucky you going to Cornwall. I long to go to Cornwall, preferably by train all the length of Britain. So romantic. Well, maybe not in Standard class round about Birmingham when refugee syndrome begins to set in. I have done that journey as far as Exeter and it was fairly 'epic'.

  21. Love the new header, I couldn't look at that lovely bun any longer without wanting to instantly eat it. Holidays have just started here so I am not frazzled yet and dare I say it, I am at work on Tuesday and I am rather looking forward to eating my dinner uninterrupted and having a wee on my own! Jo x

  22. Hey Christina,
I'm catching up after a weekend away. I guess you won't read this, so I am unable to try and meet up with you while you are on holiday. Such a shame! Should you read this, please give me a txt if you'd like to meet and greet. I am happy to drive. 07546277723
