July ...ing

I didn't mean to be away from this space for so long. I have re-adjusted to my Glasgow reality after a lovely holiday in Cornwall, reluctantly so. Work has been busy but in a good way. Since it is almost the end of July and I have not posted anything of note since June, I thought I'd just roll with my July ...ing post.

:: Spending two weeks in Cornwall. We stayed in a static caravan on our old favourite campsite just outside Portscatho. The teens went sailing every afternoon for a week, then an additional two days the following week. They loved it and are very competent apparently. Richard went cycling some days, I went for long walks every day. Jack loved the rabbits and all the fabulous dense hedges and of course the beach.

:: Celebrating James' 17th birthday. Where did the time go??

:: Travelling to London for a day of meetings. It was intense but rewarding and fun. I even managed a quick stop at Liberty's to buy a small amount of fabric. I only had 20 minutes before closing, which was probably a good thing. I ate tacos at a small place in Soho and watched the world go by before taking the sleeper back to Glasgow.

:: Loving my new stick-on gel nail polish. I like having my nails done but gel manicures are damaging for the nails as the indestructible gel is difficult to remove and weakens the natural nail. Imagine sanding wooden floors but on a small scale. Also, the UV light for hardening the gel can't be all that good. I don’t think the stick-on ones are nearly as durable but it doesn't matter because I get fed up with a colour quickly. Removal is easy, I tried it because there are spares on each sheet of stick-ons.

:: Listening to In A Place Of Darkness by Stuart MacBride. I chose the book because of the narrator, Angus King rather than the blurb. So far, so good. I am also listening to Demon Copperhead by Barbara Kingsolver. I am not enjoying that much despite the high praise this novel has received. I find it very predictable and it is far too long. I finished Last One At The Party by Bethany Clift (a postapocalyptic novel, loved it) and Love And Other Human Errors by the same author (ok, but not amazing)

:: Hopping mad because James's new dip died pale turquoise t-shirt ruined my whites. I managed to return the sheets to almost white but my favourite white t-shirt still is a sickly greenish shade of not quite white. Hard to describe.

:: Making a start with the mending pile. I mended a rip in my favourite green trousers and strengthened a weak seam on my second favourite orange trousers. For both, I had to find a perfect colour matched thread as the repairs are in visible places. Alistair's beloved body warmer is also mended but I didn't quite feel like mending school trousers yet.

:: Trying to keep the garden somewhat tidy. It is almost impossible at this time of year, everything has gone wild.

:: Fighting the fruit flies. Just as with the garden, it is almost impossible at this time of year. They multiply fast and fruit is sweet and attractive. I have several traps that fill up quickly with the creatures but they multiply very efficiently.

:: Eating barbecued food. I always think it is a bit of a faff to fire up the BBQ for not very much food but Richard likes it. We don't have one of those fancy contraptions you can see on the Instagram, that is ready at the push of a button. You know, those reels of the 24 year old single mother of half a dozen children cooking dinner on the blackstone.

:: Looking forward to a week of daily ballet. I only managed one of the summer Monday classes because we were away and this was very busy and felt a bit claustrophobic with advanced and beginners mixed. The advanced dancers use a lot more space than us beginners, with leg lifts the leaps that are properly impressive.

And that's that. Thanks for visiting 😊

  1. Beautiful photos. I'm attempting to manage our garden also, but it's a challenge, in a good way. Thanks for the book recommendations; I'm reading The Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass.

  2. I gave the audio version of Demon Copperhead a very short trial. Couldn't stand the voice. Maybe reading it would have felt different, but I have a very negative impression now. I have liked most of her books, but not all of them.

    1. Same! I tried the Kindle version, too. A clever editor could have shortened the book, maybe making it more enticing. Or at least less difficult to get to the end.

  3. That holiday in Cornwall looks idyllic and I can imagine the boys loving their sailing. Impressed with your ballet. Only walking here as exercise at the moment, I really should do more.
I think I would hate the fruit flies. The colder weather this summer has kept the mosquitoes at bay thank goodness. B x

  4. I loved Last one to the Party, a clever book and like you did not enjoy her second book.

  5. Welcome back, Christina, and of course there’s no need to feel any guilt about not blogging for a while because vacations are meant to be a break from everything. From these photos, it looks like it was a great one, even for Jack😀 Unfortunate about the laundry mishap. Hope that James had a good 🎂and yes where does that time go?

  6. Hi. I'm new to your blog and I'm enjoying it very much. At a time in my life when I'm overwhelmed with caring for my mother in law who is 94 and just started Dementia, and worrying night and day about a rebellious grandson who is 17 and knows everything about life, so who needs an education? Or rules for that matter! So I find your blog to be my chance for a few minutes of respite from all of my worrying. You write in such a way that I feel a sense of calmness in all of this stress so I thank you for that! And also wanted to ask if you've tried soaking your stained shirt in a bucket with about a half cup of of Dawn dishwashing liquid and water for an hour or two? It hasn't failed me yet.
Looking forward to reading all of the posts that I've missed since you began your blog!

  7. It sounds like you enjoyed a wonderful holiday, and I did smile at the photograph of a soggy and sandy Jack :)
I'm off to google stick-on gel nail polish now. You might just have sold it to me. Xx

  8. I have such good memories of a caravan holiday with my parents. My mum travelled down first, and then my dad joined us. My grand father was going to visit for the day, but took an earlier bus, and left the bus station and walked into town. No cell phones then, and I remember my mother very worried trying to find him. Your photographs are stunning. I am not familiar with the tall spiky flower on your first photo. I am reading a book by Flynn Berry - A Double Life. Her first book is my favourite —-Under the Harrow which won a best first novel award. I like her strong characters and the sureness of her writing as the story unfolds. Reading her books I know I am in the hands of a good writer. Your dancing sounds like such a joyous time. Jean in Winnipeg

  9. Hi Christina - lovely Cornwall pics. I’d love another holiday in Cornwall but Paul thinks it’s too far to drive. Goodness knows how long it took you. Pleased you saw some sun too as it has been in short supply this summer. Thanks for tip about stick on gel nails. My poor nails are recovering from several repeat applications of what they called builder gel which is supposed to help your natural nails, That was a lie! I persevered with Demon Copperhead but agree it could do with a bit of editing, X Doris

  10. I really enjoyed your gorgeous photos. I gave up on Demon Copperhead early on, think I have enjoyed all her other books. I was fortunate to her her speak years ago at the Dartington Book Festival when her book on 'living off the land' first came out. Laundry - Oxy clean?

  11. Hi Christina, Sounds like a marvelous vacation. I am looking forward to visiting London again. It is one of my favorite cities. It helps to go in a group of dancers that are at your level and around your height in ballet.
