do you get weeks like this?

So far, this week has been a funny one. Funny as in strange. I have been feeling sorry for myself and have been unusually grumpy and short fused. Well, I always have a bit of a temper but this week was definitely worse. It is mostly small things that get my hackles up. For example Sam eating nearly all of my freshly made granola, which I was inspired to make by Nancy and Gina. Forgetting my purse to pay for the new ballet stuff for Annie. Little boys playing ring a ring o' roses swinging on the clothes rack in said dancewear shop. Countless emails from the Scouts leader to sign up for countless camps and events. The data check and consent forms to update for my umpteen children. Eating 5 frankfurters in the middle of the night and feeling sick (and angry for eating them in the first place). Not making progress with my August sock. Having to hoover every nook and cranny in the house before treating it with insecticide (fleas, brought in by the cats). You name it, it probably made me cross. The icing of the cake was definitely being asked if I might be "able and willing" to do my lectures on an Honours course I used to be responsible for. After being made redundant. I am sure it was well meant (and accompanied by an apology for the insult but still).

Do you get weeks like this? Do you ever want to bury your head in the sand, pretending that you don't exist?

Of course all is not dire. In fact, there have been plenty of nice things, now that I think about it. Alistair latest block of speech therapy was a great success. Knit night with my German friends was fun. Being invited for a job interview was boost for my confidence. The little granola I got to eat was really scrumptious. Making a quick jeans bag for a birthday girl was satisfying (thanks Jo for the tutorial). Richard returning home after a few days away was a relief. Being able to "run" up Kelvindale Rd fills me with pride. Looking forward to drinks with friends on Saturday is always good. Looking at puppy photos and feeling tempted is a new enjoyable experience.

Today, I am less grumpy and I am holding onto my hope that I am not at the beginning of a midlife crisis but rather at the end of a few miserable days. Maybe it is the whiff of autumn in the air that puts me on edge. Maybe hormones. Maybe tiredness. Who knows.

And so it is time to move on and do something enjoyable: I just finished preparing a batch of fishcakes for dinner, wandered around the garden and baked some delicious cinnamon buns (frozen from Ikea, a real good cheat), all the while listening to "The Silkworm" by Robert Galbraith.

I wish you all a lovely weekend, may it be filled with laughter and joy. Cx

P.S. I noticed that someone has cut off all my snapdragon flower stems. Deep breath. Deep breath.

  1. Oh boy, do I know such weeks! Perhaps this doesn't sound very nice, but I'm glad I'm not the only one! xxx

  5. Oh no, fleas! You are definitely allowed to be in a bad mood about that! In 8 years of owning pets, we never had a flea problem until the month that my daughter was born. We got lax about using the flea treatment on our dogs because I hate using the chemicals, but I guess they work! And single parenting, even just for a day or two, is tough. I hope the weekend is better! Enjoy those drinks!

  6. Yes, I definitely have times like those. I had an awful visit to the supermarket today, it seemed to be full of everyone who was out on some field trip from the incredibly rude people group - not that that exists, but you know what I mean! Sometimes you are just feeling cross aren't you. I expect that being home alone with 4 children and so much to do didn't help, so hopefully that will be better now. I think that your old work had a real cheek to ask you to come in and do your work after they got rid of you. Either they do need someone in the position, so they shouldn't have made you redundant, or if they just need someone even on a one off they should have offered you work as a contractor or consultant or something. I hope that the interview went well and that you will be pleased with the outcome - and that it will be a good outcome! I hope that you have a good weekend. xx

  7. Of course I have days like that and if you were to ask my family they would say I am grumpy, short and not patient every single day. I think you need a spot of time for yourself and if you do not schedule it for yourself no one else will. Take a walk, take a bath, read a book, do something just for you. Here is to a better weekend,
    Meredith

  8. Sounds like you've had some trying times... I do like the idea of eating frankfurters in the middle of the night though, naughty or not :)
The granola episode would have sent me over the edge, never mind the fleas. And as for being asked to return to work after being made redundant... I took voluntary redundancy before being pushed. It was still a shock and felt like a slap in the face, so I sympathise with you.
Next week will be better. And I hope you have a lovely weekend.

  9. Oh Christina, but you gotta laugh haven't you? It is really frustrating on weeks like this, we all get them. I like reading about other people's ones. Does that make me a bit strange? Anyway, I am glad that a craft project cheered you up, it always does the trick for me and I am flattered that you chose to make the bag. It looks absolutely brilliant. Chin up Chicken ( that is what my nan used to say!) Jo xx

  10. Oh it's so horrible feeling cross and grumpy isn't it. I'm like it far too often. I do hope that you have an extra good weekend to make up for it all. CJ xx

  11. We've all been there at some time I think. My Mother in law got so cross with everyone once that she locked them outside, emptied a pack of cornflakes on the floor and jumped up and down on them! Apparently once she had swept up, she was fine. Probably best if you don't do the same with your granola.

  12. That sounds like enough to make anyone grumpy and I think we all have weeks like that. at least the granola is quick to make... I've just noticed that my remaining son at home has just polished off mine and there were at least three portions left!

  13. Yup, we all get them. Mine are usually related to hormones, or lack of sleep, or a hideous combination of both. Having said that, I do think you were subjected to a particularly nasty stressor being asked to come back and do lectures having been made redundant. That would have any sensible person reaching for frankfurters at 3a.m. Hope things improve X

  14. Oh Christina, I absolutely have these sort of weeks too and looking at the above comments we're not alone! BC (before children) I hardly ever used to lose my temper and now I do on a far too regular basis. I really like the fact that you are so candid about life on your blog. Next week will be better. X

  15. Hugs to you, I'm sorry you had such a hard week. I know exactly how it is, though. I'm glad you were able to find the silver linings and that things have looked up a little bit. Take care and enjoy the weekend.

  16. I have a lot of weeks like this Christina! I am not sure if I am just more irritable than most people...but I spend a lot of time thinking about the things that get on my nerves! Ha ha. I think things like this happen a lot to people, it's just that we handle them better on some weeks or don't notice them as much. Having cats is a nightmare, we have two and they have brought in fleas a few times. I think it's always the danger when they are outside so much. The bag you made is so good! I have seen that on Jo's blog before and thought I might make one myself one day. It's such a good idea isn't it! I hope the next week is much better for your Christina!

  17. We all have weeks like those it seems - most of my summer has been like that! I'm desperately trying to make up for it in the last couple of weeks of the school break! I hope you're managing a fun fill weekend full of smiles? Focus on the good bits!

  19. I have often have days/weeks like this and end up feeling super grumpy. I hope you were able to tell the 'powers that be' where to go for the lectures! What a total cheek!!!! Love the bag and those fishcakes look delicious!! I loved 'The Silkworm' xx

  20. Probably tiredness has a lot to do with it. Mind you, there's a lot of what you related that would have anyone's hackles up! At least you had some nice 'up' parts to your week too.

  21. Hey Christine,
I'm just catching up after being away. I really hope that you had a lovely weekend to compensate for the muddly week you've had. As you know I wrote the book on being a misery...it sounds like you need some treats. I wonder if you would email me your address? Big love from Cornwall.
    Leanne xx
