my year of socks - October

I can't believe that I have started knitting my second last sock of my year of socks! Today I am proudly presenting my third last sock, the October sock. This pair of socks was a pleasure to knit. I think I told you about my new favourite sock yarn? It is Artisan Sock yarn by Hazel Knits. I bought mine here to avoid customs charges for international delivery. For the October sock, I used the colourway "wild rice", which is a delightful brown, not too dark, not to beige. I don't like beige, it is a colour that in my humble opinion should be reserved for very old man's trousers. If at all.

After knitting a sock that needed full concentration in September, I wanted to knit a pattern that was easy to remember and that I could finish relatively quickly. After all, I was going to knit poolside whilst in Turkey! I really liked the pattern of my June sock, a twin spiral running down the centre front of the sock and I was wondering if I could adapt it to look different but similar. I tried a few things but in the end I settled for simply reversing the pattern. I had to make one tiny modification to make it work but I think it came out ok.

What do you think? Unfortunately, the days are gone when the light is reliably good for taking photos. I waited for nearly two weeks to get a day with some sun light! Here are the two best close-ups.

As always, the pattern can be found on the sock pattern page. Also, if you want to find out why I am designing sock patterns you should read this post.

Are you new to sock knitting? Why not try the step by step pattern I posted in January? It is a plain sock with no frills, just stockinette stitch. You can find this simple pattern on my sock pattern page.

Happy knitting! Cx

  1. Oh, Christina, they are absolutely beautiful! You are so clever. I'm sure I've said before that I wish I could knit socks (or anything for that matter) but am terrified. Maybe next year I'll have a go. xx

  2. Wild rice perfectly describes the colour doesn't it? They are lovely socks Christina! I'd like to give sock knitting a go, but I'm worried I'll make a hash of it. Maybe I should start with a very small pair, or would that be harder? xx

  3. I love your socks Christina! I would love to knit my own socks but I think I need to hone my knitting skills a bit first - I shall certainly be studying that sock pattern page when I do though! Enjoy the rest of your week.

  4. They are lovely Christina. Great colour. I agree about beige, should be banned! I am currently trying to knit a pair of plain socks, with my very patient mum acting as mentor. X

  7. You are spot on with that October autumn colour. I am not a sock knitter, I sort of resist the urge to knit them because I know I will get addicted. I am way too off piste to knit socks, I would make so many bodge alongs on the first one I would never get two the same!! Jo x

  12. These socks are all gorgeous! I would love to learn to knit socks just like this some day. Unfortunately (for knitting), I've always got a little one in my lap these days. Maybe in a few years' time!

  15. Gorgeous! Love that colour, it does look like wild rice. I'm still on my first ever pair of socks and must go back to them before they completely fall off the knitting radar...red is really hard to photograph, I can never get a good shot of red....how awesome to have a st of 12 handmade socks by the end of the year, something I may think of doing for next year! 16. I'm so impressed that you kept going with your year of socks, especially as there were months when you seemed to be wavering. I'm sure I would have given up. Have to agree with you on the colour beige, even when designers give it names like taupe, it's still beige to me. Normally I just knit very simple socks, but your posts have inspired me to be a bit more adventurous and add some patterning.

  20. That is a very comely pair of socks.

I don't normally knit socks but I'm beginning to think that with all my shoulder problems a nice lightweight sock project may be just the thing. I'm liking the look of April's horseshoe lace.
