my year of socks - December

This is my last sock pattern of 2014! I enjoyed the year of socks project but I am glad I can now focus on something else, there are quite a projects in my Ravelry queue and I look forward to a new knitting challenge or two.

I fell in love with Hazel Knits Artisan Sock yarn and for the fourth month running I have used a skein of this yarn for my socks. It is a bright deep green with the name 'shady verdant'. It is semi-solid, which I like more than solid colours.

I really liked my Ensign's braid sock back in March and enough time had passed to forget the tediousness of a complex cable pattern, so I went ahead and looked for another cable. I set eyes on a Celtic cable and although it is wide, it is not too wide for a sock. I found the pattern for the Celtic cable in my trusted stitch library, which I have used a few times this year.

Although there are more crossing overs for the Celtic cable than there were for the Ensign's braid, I found it less tiresome to knit. I was quite worried about life last March due to my unemployment and my thoughts kept wandering off, with a disastrous effect on the braid knitting. By December I was working again (albeit in a temporary position) and life seemed more cheerful. I knitted these socks up in no time at all and I am pleased with the result. It was difficult to get a good photo of the braid, and I had to settle for one where the colour is no true. I just love the way the braid bands weave in and out and around each other, don't you?

So, what do you think? Do you like the last of my 12 socks? I certainly do. I was thinking of giving this pair away but I have changed my mind. I love the colour just too much.
As always, the pattern can be found on the sock pattern page. Also, if you want to find out why I am designing sock patterns you should read this post.

I have quite a lot of leftover sock yarn and will make a blanket with it. It is a long term project because I don't quite have enough yarn. If you have any sock yarn remnants that are not enough for a whole project and would like to donate it, I would make good use of it. Please let me know!

I hope the new year has started ok for everybody. I undecorated the house today, with the exception of the star fairy lights in the window. The living room feels large once more and it is nice not to step on needles, or find chewed up tree decorations. Jack by the way has been a very good puppy and only chewed a few crochet baubles and 3 small clip on birds. The tree remained standing for the duration. We continue to be lazy but we managed to round everybody up today to go for a walk together. Just two more days of the holiday left now...

Have a lovely weekend. Cx

I'm undecorating the house this weekend; a very enjoyable activity, as I think the living room always looks fresh and spacious afterwards. All of us start school again Monday and I'm actually looking forward to getting back into a routine. xxx

  10. Those socks are GORGEOUS! And the shoes are too cute too!!! I wish I knew how to knit, someone tried to teach me 23 years ago, and it was a big fail. But If I would have kept practicing, I bet I would have gotten it. But you... you have serious talent! I'm very envious!

  15. Really love the green and the cable pattern. I had intended to remove the Christmas decorations today but as our house is a house of colds and flu it is all still there. It will have to be the sign of recovery!

  17. I'm very impressed that you have stuck with your Year of Socks all the way through. I love the Celtic cable on these socks. I don't blame you for wanting to keep them for yourself!

  18. I love that colour. 'Verdant' has to be one of my favourite words, and green is one of my favourite colours. That shade reminds me of new shoots coming up through the ground.
I could only dream of knitting something so complicated...

  19. The socks look great - I love that colour. I have also undecorated and everything seems a bit bare. But it will pass (and before we know it, it will be time to decorate again). I knit a hot water bottle cover with what looks like the same Celtic cable as your socks.
