raindrops in a puddle

Hi it's Annie

My mum asked if I would like to do a guest post about a skirt I made at a sewing course. So I said yes.

So a couple of days ago I made a skirt with three pleats. But it wasn't my mum teaching me, it was a proper teacher [which is a change]. There was me, two teachers and eight other girls. The lessons were at The Stitchery in Glasgow.

I spent a long time choosing my fabric. It is from the Rain or Shine range by Stephanie Thannhauser and is called 'Raindrops in a Puddle'. I like the colours.

We started off by practicing some simple stitches and sewing in straight lines and after two hours we moved on to cutting. We were finding it so interesting learning about grains and patterns that we didn't even notice that our parents came to pick us up.

The next day we had to finish cutting which I couldn't do because I had fractured my wrist that morning. It was lucky  that I could still do sewing. But by the end of the day I had completed my pleats at the front of the skirt, I attached and basted the front and back together. To be honest sewing with a fractured wrist isn't that bad.

On the last day we added in the elastic in the back. When I was adding it in the safety pin snapped off and one off the teachers managed to pull the elastic through the fabric without the pin. If I was her I would of given up and started from the beginning. After that was sorted I made a double stitched hem and then my skirt was finished.

I like it how it's turned out and I will be wearing it often. I like it how the pleats give it a nice shape and how the elastic makes it look tidy.

I really liked the sewing machines in the class and found them easy to work with. It was a lot easier than using my own machine. It helped me understand how to control the speed.

I liked it how the teachers Susie and Jemma didn't rush us and they explained things well. I would like to go back to another class and learn to sew a different thing. I would like to learn to sew a pin cushion and an apron.

I hope you enjoyed my post. Have a lovely week. Annie xxx

  8. Hi Annie, how clever are you, sewing a skirt with a fractured wrist - I'm very impressed. I broke my wrist a few years ago and dont think I would have been able to sew with it at all! Thankyou for doing such a great post, your skirt looks brilliant, can't wait to hear all about the next thing you make :)

  16. Nice pattern and skirt. Sewing is tricky enough without a broken wrist, broke mine as a child, and doing pleats is always tricky.
    Great job.

  24. I'm glad you had a good time. Sewing is a great thing to be able to do, I loved making a lot of my clothes when I was a teenager. What will you make next, then? Aprons are easy and all straight lines, or cushion covers are always fun to design and do?
