rays of sunshine and a rainbow of colours

It is the time of year when eating outside is still possible but the wasps are never far. Signs like the one below make sense all of a sudden, although I prefer to deal with the problem on a wasp by wasp basis.

There is a chill in the air in the morning and I swear I could just see the faintest hint of steamy breath today when I took Jack for his early morning walk. Soon hats and gloves will need to be unearthed from the roomy chest where we keep seasonal clothing. Not too soon I hope.

Do you know the story of Frederick (by Leo Lionni), the little field mouse that collects rays of sunshine, a rainbow of colours and marvellous words whilst all the other field mice collect food for winter? When the nuts and grains are eaten up before the winter is over, Frederick warms the hearts of his fellow mice with his supplies of sun rays, and he feeds their souls with colourful stories.

I am doing what Frederick is doing, collecting rays of sunshine and rainbows of colours for the long Scottish winter ahead. Admittedly, it is only the end of summer just now and we are still to look forward to a glorious autumn (there's to hope) but it is never too soon to start. I am sharing some of my collected colours with you today, and will keep some for the winter. I am still looking for rays of sunshine, the sun is quite elusive at the moment. Enjoy.

I hope you are also collecting rays of sunshine and rainbows of colours. Of course it may be Spring time where you are but as I said, it is never too early to start collecting for the winter. Have a lovely week. x

  2. Oddly, I haven't seen one wasp yet in County Down. Everything feels wrong weather-wise here - it's been autumn almost the whole way through August but without the delicious coolness of misty mornings and hardly any colour. The garden feels wrong too - just a few apples and glorious, huge pink heads of hydrangea, but really nothing else. Muggy weather. Never thought I'd miss wasps!

    Have a lovely week.

  11. What an absolutely lovely idea, collecting rays of sunshine and rainbows of colours for the winter ahead. I love it. I've been collecting my own "mental postcards" this summer to pull out and mentally examine on the darkest, wettest winter days. The cold doesn't bother me, or the dark mornings and evenings, but endless days of rain and grey skies pull me down. A little sun does wonders, real or imagined. x

  12. I love this idea! Autumn's creeping in here, too but there's that last hurrah of the late summer colours. Your photos are great - I particularly like the raspberries. They seem to have a little glow about them!
