getting to know my new camera

I hope you all had a nice weekend. Mine was pleasant and even relaxing. The kids and Richard would probably agree. I went dancing on Friday night, Muthaclubbers was on at the local bowling club. I danced so much that I injured my foot and had to take it easy for the rest of the weekend. I blame the excellent DJ for this.

The weather was splendid and I took the opportunity to try out my new camera. My last camera was a Canon Powershot SX50 bridge camera. It packed in recently, with the lens being completely unresponsive. I know many bloggers use DSLR camera but I am an erratic photographer and tend to take a picture of a flower head one second, then of a bird a million miles away the next. Changing lenses to accommodate my habits seems like a lot of hassle. I am also a lazy photographer and tend to use my camera on automatic mode rather than manual, although I do have the knowledge and skills to use it on manual. I know that the image quality is superior with DSLR cameras but to be honest, I am not sure if this is noticeable at my level of photography.

After spending an afternoon researching bridge cameras, I decided to get a Nikon Coolpix P610. I have used Canon cameras for many many years and felt a bit disloyal for buying a Nikon camera. I could have just bought a straight replacement but Dr Google told me that I am not the only one with a Canon camera that has a totally unresponsive lens and I didn't want to repeat the experience. Also, the specifications for the Nikon camera were just better than those for the Canon camera, in particular the lens aperture and the low light photography options. I don't like using the flash mode and taking pictures in low light is important for me.

The new camera arrived on Friday afternoon and I immediately put it on the charger to be able to take my first photo. I just couldn't wait. I have taken lots of photos to test various settings. So far so good. The buttons are more or less in the same place as on my old camera and it I am getting used to it quickly. What do you think? I may not be a master of photography but I am happy enough. I think me and my new camera will work together well in no time.

Happy Monday everybody! I hope this week will bring lots of joy and happiness. xx

Addendum/edit: Thank you all for your comments of support and for sharing your experiences with growing teenager and helping them make the right choices. I much appreciated your thoughts. x

  1. I have an older Nikon Coolpix, which I love! I think I'll re-read the manual and start clicking!

  2. Maybe that's my problem, I never read the manual and just point, click away and hope for the best. You have certainly captured some great moments. Beautiful tulips.

  3. Your photographs with the new camera are a resounding success. I always feel I am cheating if I don't use manual setting, but often I am not overjoyed with the results, I should probably relax and choose a setting sometimes rather than faff about with manual. Your quilt is fabulous! Love the colour mix X

  5. I think your photos are lovely. I do use a DSLR but I tend to keep the same lens on most of the time. It's partially laziness and habit, but also I just really like it and find it comfortable to use for the kinds of photos I like to take. But I've had a lot of fun with my old point-and-shoot, it's old but still decent and certainly easier to carry around!

  6. I feel the same way - I'm too lazy for a DSLR! We do have an old Canon 450D but I never use it these days. I don't like carrying the kit around and like you, I like to to be able to take a photo of something close, or a landscape one minute and then zoom in quickly when I spot an interesting bird, so a zoomy bridge camera works best for me

Your photos are great so it looks like you've got the hang of the new camera and it's doing a good job! I've been using Nikon Coolpix for a few years - I had a p500, then a p520 and now I have a p900 which has amazing zoom, though doesn't always perform as well as I'd like at macro!

  8. Hey Christina,
Lovely crisp shots, my friend. I don't know what camera I have. Illustrations have to go have a look. I just point and press, sometimes use the zoom.

  12. Your first shots with your new camera look great. I agree faffing with lenses often means you miss a great picture. The simpler the better to catch the moment! Have a great week. B X

  13. Looking good lady. I did GCSE photography at school but too much wastes too much time for just the right shot. Good luck with practising. Jo x
