a lucky encounter

A few days ago I met Mr and Mrs Bullfinch*. They were searching the woodland floor for edibles. They were so engrossed in their foraging that they didn't pay me any attention (I was no more than five metres away). Or maybe they are just used to people, I spotted the pair along the main path through the woods. I felt privileged to watch the birds forage. I haven't seen the pair since, they must be nesting. I read that they usually lay their first clutches around mid May and I'll keep my eyes open for youngsters.

Wishing you a wonderful week. I hope the weather keeps for a bit, it is always nice not to wear waterproofs. xx

* Please correct me if I got the species wrong

  5. Oh my, such beautiful colours. And I love that last picture. Taking your word that they really are bullfinches. I know the difference between a robin and a penguin, having gotten up close and personal to both, but that's about the limit of my knowledge of our feathered friends. Must. try. harder.

  11. You got some great photos of them. I saw a male bullfinch in the garden a few months ago, he came two days on the trot then I didn't see him again until last week. He was hanging around quite a bit but I didn't see the female. She was probably here, it's just that the male really stands out with his bright colours. I was thrilled to see him in the garden, I just hope he hangs around now.

  12. Great photographs! I have a pair that come to the bird feeders every day, they are such beautiful little birds, and mate for life apparantly, which is borne out by my pair, they are always together! Very sweet X

  14. Great captures - they really are lovely birds. It would be fantastic if you could see the young. One of my allotment neighbour's has a wren's nest in her shed. The parent birds are coming in through a tiny gap to feed the young. Cycling over the common today I disturbed a heron at close quarters which gave me a bit of a shock!

  15. Lovely photos, We have a pair of bullfinches visit our garden and feed from the feeders two or three times a day, I guess they are nesting somewhere nearby. They are a joy to watch:)
