Five on Friday - the random edition

I haven't written a randoms post for a while. Life is quite random sometimes and it seems appropriate to reflect this in my writing. I guess I randomly blog about whatever pops into my head....

:: My mum found a photo of me aged 12. I can't remember wearing my hair in bunches but I obviously did. Annie looks a lot like me at this age, only she is blonde and blue eyed. She is now worried that she might end up looking like me. I can't blame her. I also notice that my current choice of hair dye matches my natural colour at age 12.

:: On Monday I lost my phone. I was hyperventilating and feeling paralysed all at once. Then I remembered that nifty app that comes as a default on iPhones, 'Find my Phone'. Only it is on my phone and I wasn't sure what to do..... A deep breath and a Google search later I was on the Apple website that finds my phone, logged into my account and hey presto, my phone was located. It was in Maryhill, a neighbourhood not too far away, where I had definitely not visited that day. It was moving slowly, presumably in the finders pockets. It is possible to freeze the phone and send the finder a message, which I did. I asked to call Richard, please. It seemed silly to follow it whilst it was moving but after a short while it was stationary. I wasn't sure how accurate the GPS location was but the map suggested it might be in the block where the police station is. I went there, Richard's phone in hand. Just as I walked through the door of the police station, Richard's phone started ringing. It was a nice police officer who had seen my message on the screen of my locked phone. She was about three metres away from me. She was also a bit frazzled. Apparently my phone kept ringing (Annie kept calling). I had lost the phone in the woods, on our dog walk. A kind person found it and did what every responsible citizen should do. Thank you.

:: It was my Birthday yesterday. Alistair reminded me of this at 6:21 in morning. I am 46 years old and definitely past the halfway mark if the life expectancy data for a woman of in my demographic group is anything to go by. I am not sure if I find this a bit worrying or not. I ate so much cake that I can now roll down the hill. I received lovely presents, all wished for. My favourite has to be the set of six vintage Villeroy & Boch Acapulco espresso cups*. My granny and grandfather owned this tableware when I was a child. There was a little jam pot (because proper people didn't serve the jam in their jars). My granny gave me it a few years ago and I think of her every time I see it. We use it as a sugar bowl. The design is very 1970s. I had seen the espresso cups on Etsy and dropped lots of hints and it worked.

:: Sam sat his first exam yesterday afternoon. It was English, his least favourite subject. Sam was nervous, which is unusual, he is usually cool as a cucumber. We were working at home due to schools being closed for elections. I woke Sam up at 10 with coffee (decaf at his request), then Richard made him a hearty breakfast and took him for a walk with Jack to ease the nerves. He says it went ok and that it wasn't as bad as he had thought it might be. His close reading was about Frozen (the movie, an interesting choice). Macbeth for the critical essay. Just six more exams to go.

:: We enjoyed our first BBQ last night, to celebrate my Birthday with our loveliest friends. Burgers in brioche buns, coleslaw and crisps, Prosecco, beer and laughter. What else could one wish for?

Thanks for stopping by and saying hello. I am linking up with Amy for Five on Friday, if you have a minute, do pop over and say hello. Have a really nice weekend. xxx

* I couldn't find any images that would be permanent. There are some Pinterest boards but I can't really seem the properly because a black box covers the screen, demanding I log in or register.  There are plenty of Google images, mostly of auction stuff.

  1. Happy Birthday Christina! So glad you got your phone back. I found one once that was buried in a pile of leaves (it was making a sound which was why I looked for it!) I had to walk back past the spot I had picked it up from, in the dark, and was really worried someone would be waiting for me as it was highly likely it had been stolen and dumped there to come back for. I handed it in and turned out it had been stolen.........

Enjoy your weekend and hope the rest of Sam's exams go well.

  8. Happy Birthday! And what a relief to find your phone. I still keep old fashioned paper and pencil address book and calendar because I can anything easily.

  9. Happy belated birthday, it sounds like the espresso cups were a much longed for gift that will bring back happy memories for you. Great news about the phone, there are some very honest people out there despite what the newspapers would have us believe, it must have been a relief to get it back. Good luck to Sam, English was always my worst subject too. Daniel's final exams at uni start on Monday and Eleanor has her first A level exam next Wednesday. I've bought her some Rescue Remedy lozenges to take in to the exams with her, not sure if they work or not but it's worth a try.

  13. Happy belated birthday! How is 46? I'm only asking because I'll turn 46 on May 19th. I actually don't mind growing older. My kids are all grown and hubby and I almost ready to enjoy life alone (one 'child' still home!). I have so much I want to do (with hubby and by myself) and I/we finally have the time to do it!

Love the picture of you at 12. I love looking back on old photos. I don't have many of me as a child as Mum still has them but my daughter (lucky for her) doesn't look a lot like me though people say she does.

    Have a great week

  18. Hey Christina,
Happy birthday, my friend. Welcome to the wonderful age of 46! I am slowly morphing into my own mother. At Annie's age I would have been horrified by that fact. At this age, I am rather pleased. If I can be half the woman she is, I'll be thankful. I'm sure Annie will see it that way too.
Good luck to Sam. I'm sure he'll do very well.
    Leanne xx

  19. Happy Birthday Christina. I think you're going to have a great year. I think we all turn into our mothers - eventually, which is no bad thing in my opinion. Although lately I've been struck by how much my 20-year old daughter resembles my mum at the same age. Good luck for the exam season - I'm sure Sam will keep a cool head and do very well. Oh and thank goodness you got your phone back. I've not lost one yet... But the children have so I know that panicky feeling - and the relief - by proxy!

  22. Happy Birthday!!!! 46 is nothing, I am almost 52!!! Which sounds a lot older. I love your hair at 12, so cute. My middle son went into pure panic mode when my sister told him he looked like me, you could see the disgust creep across his face.
    Hugs,

  23. Belated happy birthday wishes, glad you had a lovely time. I lost my phone just before Christmas and someone took it into a doctor's surgery (not mine) near where I had dropped it and the receptionist rang our landline which was on there to say it was found. Thank goodness for kind and thoughtful people:)

  24. Belated Happy Birthday Christina.
I too will be 46 this year ... somewhat daunting and yet not even worth mentioning at the same time. My brain seems to think I'm still 27! I'm happy to go along with it.
Your birthday celebrations sound exactly as I would choose.

  25. Slightly belated birthday wishes. What a sweet 12 year old picture. I wore bunches like that too, and sometimes plaits. I am 52 this week, 46 is very young, believe me. It feels like quite a long time ago that I was 46. Each age and stage has it's joys, trials, and compensations. Sounds like a lovely birthday, I must google your coffee cups, I adore vintage china. X
