weekend randoms

Good evening all, how are you?

This weekend was full of activities, all good. This evening I am bringing you a collection of random photos and happenings.

It was eye test Saturday, I managed to get an appointment for three of four children. Good eyesight in all. Next up is dentist Thursday. I am grateful for the NHS that gives me all that for free.

We went to a food festival somewhere in an derelict warehouse behind the old Yorkhill Children's Hospital. I dragged the kids along because I wanted to see a work colleague who was doing a small outreach event, talking about insects as protein source and future food for the masses. There were critters to try. I tried crunchy mealworms (nutty and rather tasty), dried cricket (slightly salty and tasty) and a locust (large, not pretty, big wings, which stuck between my teeth). I didn't bother with the buffalo worms, they were teeny tiny.

The children opted for a more traditional lunch, large tasty Scotch eggs. This being an artisan kind of event with lots of rare breed meats, specialty beers and hipster beards, I should have been suspicious of the pricing but I am sometimes remarkably naive. Four Scotch eggs cost me - take a deep breath- £14. Yes, indeed. We left soon after.

Richard and I went for a really nice meal with friends. It was Thai themed and the temptation to lick my plate was almost unbearable. It was really that good. The cocktails were good, too, as was the company.

I enjoyed a long lonely morning walk with Jack. There was mist rising from the grass and dew glittered in the morning sun. I really love late summer. Jack rolled in something unsavoury and needed a good wash after our walk.

Our community club is back for the new term. I went along and enjoyed myself. It was good to be just an ordinary member enjoying a chat and a coffee. I am glad I decided to retire from the committee and volunteer group.

Richard and a collection of teenagers worked in the garden, building up the cobblestone steps. It is looking good, so much better than the wall that was in this place before. I am looking forward to pressure wash the steps in the spring, when all is done. The builder came over today to see the state of affairs and was impressed with Richard's hard work. He has Popeye arms now.

I made shaving soap for Richard, who will be celebrating his birthday next week. I hope he is not reading this. It took six different fats and oils, which I thought was a bit of a faff.

I haven't opened my computer for more than 24 hours! This must be first in a long time. I hope to find some time to read blogs and catch up with all my blog friends soon. I should also reply to your questions in your comments, please bear with me for just a wee while longer, Netflix is beckoning just now.

Wishing you a lovely week! xx

  1. So your hipster events sound a lot like ours. It's sweeping the globe, ha. I haven't eaten Scotch eggs but I've seen them in cookbooks and I think that kind of pricing is a travesty. Yikes. I enjoyed reading about your weekend and seeing your photos of the sights. I should send you an email with a photo I took of what I think might be the Cachaca you were discussing recently. I went hunting for it in the liquor store because I was so curious after you mentioned it!

  2. Great collection of photos of your weekend Christina. I've never had Scotch eggs, but I bet they weren't worth the price you had to dish over. And eating bugs?! I don't think I could do that (I would rather eat an expensive egg too). Thank you for the reminder to wash the dog ... my dog stinks and we're taking him on a 4-hour drive tomorrow so thought it would be more pleasant in the confines of our truck if he smelled of pretty shampoo instead of stinky dog.

  3. We are well on our side of the pond. Tomorrow is Labor Day here and we plan to do as little labor as possible. I found your randoms delightful! I think I would prefer forking out the sum for the Scotch eggs as opposed to ingesting insect protein, though...you are so adventurous, Christina! Happy Birthday to your husband, and I hope you and yours have a good week. xx

  4. I do keep seeing more about insects for protein, well done for giving them a try, loved the photos of the art work on the walls.

  5. Jack looks so sweet in his bathtub! I'm interested to know if he behaved as well as he looks to be in the photo? £14 on scotch eggs, me thinks they are a similar price in the farm shop here. I had the dubious pleasure of a £20 spend on five sausages, bread flour, a bottle of juice and a loaf of sourdough! I like the sound of your shaving soap I must have a google. That and a pair of knitted socks would make a fab present for Mike x

  6. That reminds me of my sons visit to Vietnam where he happily munched crickets and said they were delicious. He even sent me a photo, bless him! Sounds like you are enjoying being back into your term routine. Glad the building works are going well. Have a great week. B x

  9. Fourteen quid for scotch eggs!!! - I'd have been with you, - they can have worms and crickets! What a lovely snapshot post Christina loved seeing Jack being washed in the bucket :)
    Have a great week.

  10. I do like your weekend randoms! Given that I supply our local Farm Shop with "artisan" bakes you might think I could sympathise with those high prices but £14 for four Scotch eggs.... Really? Having a laugh!

  11. Made shaving soap? Seriously? I am simultaneously impressed and bewildered. How? Why? That's the highlight for me!

  12. Anything with 'artisan' in the name seems to be flipping expensive. I'm very impressed that you tried the insects. It makes perfect sense that we should use them as a food source but I would have to take a deep breath and think of something else before I tried one! Lovely photos. Sam x

  13. I hope Richard enjoys using his shaving soap. Such a packed weekend. I too would balk at £14 for 4 scotch eggs!! Have a great week xx

  14. Eeek, I can't believe you ate those things, I'd be too squeamish to pick them up, never mind put them in my mouth. Love the photo of Jack having his bath, I've never thought to stand Archie in a trug, I usually just throw a bucket of water over him but I'll remember this for next time.

  15. I'm very impressed with your bug-eating experiment - rather you than me! I'm also impressed that you've managed to get a teenage workforce to build your garden for you - can't wait to see! :-) xx

  17. Love your randoms because they are essentially your life! I hope you ate every crumb of those scotch eggs - I do that sometimes on prices, it comes from making all my own stuff and not realising how much bought things actually are. Have a great week. I am literally mucking out the house because the children went back today and I have let S***t slide over the hols to avoid the stress of asking them to pick things up off the floor constantly. Jo x

  18. Glad you had a good weekend! The scotch eggs sound very expensive to me, but if it was that or insects I would pay as I really don't think I could bear to eat an insect knowingly!! xx

  19. Hope the garden and building work is going well :) Lovely pics as always! You're very brave to try the insects - they do say it's the future! :S Hope Richard enjoys his soap :) xx

  20. Love those reflections and Jack's air of resignation. Hope the shaving soap is well received. Did you manage to finish watching Stranger Things? I binge watched last weekend and really enjoyed it. Had forgotten Winona could act!

  21. I know insects are the way forward but the thought of wings getting stuck in my teeth- aaargh!! £14 for the scotch eggs was eye wateringly expensive. Great photo's, I love the one of Jack having his bath x
