Five on Friday - the mundane edition

Friday again. Not sure how this happened, it only just seemed to be last Friday. I fancied putting together a Five on Friday post, it is fun and a good opportunity to put those miscellaneous things that make up life into context. Thanks Amy for hosting the link-up, despite having a difficult time. Don't get exited about this post, as the title suggests, it is rather mundane.

:: General good news. Alistair noted this down on our notice board. I like being awesome. I guess sharing the glory with Jack and Richard is ok. Alistair knows us well and his description of Sam is particularly apt.

:: Lovely friends. This is me all wrapped up warm in my duffle coat and a shawl Jo of Three Stories High made for me. Last Saturday, I found  a little packet in the front porch. It contained the most squishy lovely shawl ever and I have worn it ever since, inside and outside. The duffle coat and shawl are a perfect match and I am happy. Jo used sock wool remnants for this shawl, some of hers, some of mine. It is great to see my unloved remnants turned into something I love. Jo and I have matching shawls, just like good friends would. I love a good friend! Jo and Richard surely must have been conspiring, look how well the pendant and the shawl go together! Richard gave me the pendant on our wedding anniversary in December.

note to self: must get some sleep

:: Cooking. I have decided to take the helm in the kitchen again after several months of leaving the cooking largely to Richard. I cooked every day this week and only burnt one soup. I remembered it was still on the stove when I was just getting comfortable in the second warrior position during my yoga class. Other 'exiting' kitchen news: I found a way to get pomegranate seeds out of the fruit without covering everything in bright red juice. Slam the intact fruit vigorously and repeatedly down on your work surface. Break the skin and hey presto, the seeds pop out as if they were desperate to leave. It is quite therapeutic actually, a good way to deal with frustration.

:: Bargains. Richard is away for ten days, starting tomorrow. I felt the urgent need to be prepare for the week ahead and ordered my groceries online, from Waitrose as I felt I needed to indulge a little. I stocked up on laundry detergent, dish washer tablets and other generally pricy items like teenage pimple face wash, which were all half price. After applying a £20 discount code,  I made a saving of £51 pounds bringing down the weekly groceries shop to £100, which I think for a family of six is not bad (correct me if I am wrong). I forgot to order toilet roll, which might be problematic.

:: Holidays. It is still a long time until the summer but it is never too early to get exited about summer holidays. I have booked ours, we are returning to Cornwall. I am so exited that I nearly started packing. We are able to travel before the English summer holidays, which is a double bonus because prices are low and the roads won't be congested.

That's it all. I hope you are not yawning too much. I did warn you, nothing much going on here. Have a lovely weekend. It has been snowing a little here but nothing dramatic or worthwhile getting exited about. I am hoping for a little bit more, enough to make a snow angel or two.

  3. Love the shawl it goes so well with that great coat of yours and beautiful pendant. Awesome eh...you've got those children trained. What an amazing shop. Sadly tho we have Waitrose they don't deliver and they charge more for items over here. Freight charges according to them :(. Bet you will have a wonderful time in Cornwall. We are hoping to go there in may for one of our family holidays. Need to book a big enough cottage first. Hope it's not too cold up there. Have a great weekend. B x

  5. Gorgeous duffel and shawl, you look lovely in them. And brilliant that the shawl is made from leftover yarn. She must have been busy to have that many leftovers, I'm very impressed! Wishing you a good weekend Christina. Never too soon to start planning that summer holiday! CJ xx

  6. It looks just how I thought it would in my head! I did shopping at waitrose this week too because I had a voucher and free delivery. Unfortunately Megan noticed the difference between frozen peas from Waitrose and those from Tesco. She doesn't normally eat peas but 'these' were lovely. i have inadvertantly reared a child snob!! have a good week, it might be quite hard going I guess or it might swing the other way and you can do all the deciding. From your shawl friend Jo x

  7. I love the beautiful combination of the shawl and the duffle coat, both tell their own stories. The edging is amazing with the beads. Sadly we don't live anywhere near a Waitrose but I do like to shop in there when I visit my daughter, sadly the wallet doesn't. Hope all goes well with hubby away. Take care.

  8. I wish we had a Waitrose a little closer the nearest is about 12 miles away but we do go there sometimes for special treats. It sounds as if you had some bargains there. Your coat and shawl are lovely such a bright and cheerful colour:)

  10. The shawl and the pendant are both lovely, and made even more special since they were both given to you by people who care about you. The duffle coat is something I've been admiring since you were sewing and blogging about it. I'm in awe of how great it turned out.

I enjoy reading about your family, and your life in Glasgow, Chrisitna. Please don't ever think it's mundane. :-)

  11. Lovely Five on Friday! The shawl is just gorgeous - bright and cheery for the winter. I'm looking forward to the summer hols. One of the airlines was having a great sale so booked my trip home to England to visit Mum saving over six hundred dollars from last year! I'm really excited.

  12. I have yet to find what you share as being the least bit boring! I so admire necklace Richard gave you and the scarf Jo made for you and the friendships you are building...love your photo, too! Pounding pomegranates to liberate their seeds and ones frustration sounds like a win win, to me :) Hope all goes well in the next 10 days in particular. Bravo for your bargain shopping and vacation plans! Our snow is supposed to be here for several days. I hope you get to make snow angels. xx

  14. Not mundane at all! Just lovely family life and lovely things happening. Very calming and relaxing to me right now in fact so I really enjoyed this post! Your shawl from Jo is beautiful, she is such a lovely person - just like you! - isn't she. Enjoy the trip, I hope it is great fun and that the planning is fun too!

  15. Hey Christina,
My favourite kind of post! I am also excited that you have booked your jollies in Cornwall; maybe we could meet up again? Marc's new job means that he is only home every other weekend, and even then he gets home late Friday and leaves after tea on Sunday. I think a weekly shop from a nice supermarket, with a few treats, is entirely appropriate. Have a lovely weekend.

  18. Nothing mundane about real stories from real people living real lives. I'd take a blog post like this any day over the filteed edited junk that dominates social media!

  19. You most definitely are awesome! The shawl is so beautiful - it goes wonderfully with your duffle coat :) you can't beat a good friend. Cornwall is a great holiday destination - enjoy all the planning :) xx

  20. Love the duffle and shawl combo. If I'd made either of those I'd never take them off. Envious of the Waitrose stock-up (they're not in our part of the country), too. They do seem to offer tasty looking treats. Have a good week.

  21. A lovely post - these are the best ones I always think. Nothing is happening, but everything is really. Love the shawl - Jo is so clever. I'd love to meet her some day, and you. I think £100 for a weekly shop for 6 (especially Waitrose!) is very good. We can spend around £70-80 if we go to Aldi or easily over £100 if we go to Sainsburys, which is nearer and nicer. And there's only four of us. We do drink a lot of wine though.... xx

  22. I daren't tell you how much I spend on food at Waitrose! I would be overjoyed if a weekly shop cost £100. What a beautiful scarf, the colours are perfect. Richard did a great job of choosing your pendant, what a nice gift. Great post as always X

  23. The little beads on the edge of your new scarf make all the difference. Wonderful idea and a beautiful job. Did she know to use blue as an accent to match your coat?

  24. I loved this post! A beautiful shawl, and fabulous imagery of mid-yoga soup rescue, and pomegranate pummeling! xx
