snow and ice and all things nice

It has been very wintery here in Glasgow. Schools and University closed on Wednesday and have not reopened for business. Of course we are encouraged to work at home and an email from HR confirmed that if we weren't able to do so, we would not be asked to take annual leave. I thought that was a bit cheeky. It is not easy with four kids in the house. You wouldn't believe how much time it takes to get two little boys all dressed up for the great outdoors and the reverse is just as time consuming. So much wet stuff draped over every available radiator! As luck goes, our heating gave up the ghost. Well, sort of. One day we had no heating, the next no hot water. It is a valve that gets stuck one way or the other, making it impossible to have both heat and hot water. We really need a new boiler, it has been on the brink for a while bur Richard always managed to get it back to life. We also need new windows in the front and the whole house painted. It is positively shabby (but not a whiff of chic). The shower leaks, too. I guess we'll have to toss a coin and see what gets done this year.

I have never seen as much snow as this in Glasgow. It was beautiful, it really was. It is far less beautiful now after three days of messing it up with sledges and walking about. I made bird food with all available seeds and some beef dripping for the little birds. It took them a wee while to discover it but I am glad some birds have started taking nibbles. Our garden is not as bird friendly as it should be. I am working on it.

The kids did a fair amount of sledging. They had so much fun but I think come Friday they were a bit fed up with it all. Not James, he is a true snow man. He spent hours and hours outside, just playing happily in the road. There were no cars in our road from Tuesday night up to Saturday. Unbelievable. If I think about it, is a bit shocking actually. It just goes to show how little needs to go off kilter before the infrastructure breaks down. The financial cuts to all services is really noticeable. In the end, it was the menfolks in the street that cleared the road by hand, one shovel at the time. Richard and James also cleared the steep lanes down to the school for Monday. It never ceases to amaze me that a country so far north cannot handle snow. I don't think I had a single snow day during my entire childhood in Switzerland and there was plenty of snow. I remember being on a bus once on my way to school, on snowy roads. When we got to a steepish hill, the driver got out, mounted snow chains, drove up the hill, dismounted the chains and continued the journey. Mostly though, the roads are cleared within hours, as our the pavements. Alas, I chose Scotland to be my home and I have no choice than to live with the services available. The grass is always greener elsewhere!

We had a dinner party scheduled for Friday. I know. We decided to go ahead anyway. You need a bit of companionship when stuck inside. On Thursday, Richard and I trudged down to the supermarket with back packs to get supplies. While everyone else was stocking up on bread and milk, we bought porcini mushrooms and tenderstem broccoli, and a few bottles of wine. Oh, and some eggs. The shopping adventure took two hours. Walking through deep snow is hard work. We had to repeat the trip on Friday as we couldn't quite carry all we needed.

The dinner party was a success although two guests in driving distance had to cancel at the very last minute. We asked two local friends over, one hour before dinner. They had eaten already but humoured us anyway. That's what good friends do. We had beef Wellington and potato gratin for our main, lambs ear lettuce salad with bacon croutons and egg for starters. For pudding I made a pecan maple pie. It was completely stuck in the tin because it leaked. No wonder the recipe books shows it photographed in the tin... It was really delicious.

Sam meanwhile was working. It turned out that the Chinese restaurant was really busy. Lots of dishes to wash.

Today, we went sledging with friends. Annie missed out because she had a teenage tantrum and refused to come. It was so much fun! Not the tantrum, the sledging. I mostly enjoyed watching the others but did of course also have a go. Alistair and James are total daredevils, it is amazing that they didn't break any bones. Someone had built a jump on the slope, over which James and Alistair whizzed with little elegance but plenty of enthusiasm. From the distance it was a bit like the roadrunner running out over the canyon and then plummet down. Their bums must be pure agony now and their brains were shaken up thoroughly, too. Jack had a great time, too. He raced the kids and got so excited that he stole Alistair's hat. It was so funny to see him run up the slope with a bright yellow minion hat in his mouth, followed by a crazy nine year old. We ended the afternoon in the pub (dogs and all). The waitress was mad and the chips disappointing but the company was priceless. The evening entertainment was the BFG on Netflix. You just can't beat the Queen's farting corgis.

I am not sure what we'll do tomorrow but I hope to do a bit of sewing at least. I just finished a blouse and I am still working on James' quilt. I also quite fancy waffles for breakfast, if we have enough eggs. What are you doing? I hope you are enjoying the weekend. Thanks for stopping by. xx

  1. It sounds a wonderful family time. I’d forgotten the wet clothes draped everywhere all day after being out in snow. It’s universal it seems 😆. Some rain here but not enough to shift the snow (yet). Love Jack stealing the hat. A JR through and through. Poppy thoroughly approves x

  2. Snows a bit of fun for about a day. We lived in Colorado and got snowed into out house in a blizzard and I swore I'd never live in snow again.
    It's chilly and sunny here.

  3. It always amazes me that when we have snow, people manage to pull together. The infrastructure nationwide may break down but 'good people' local and family seem to cope really well. I remember the 'getting kids wrapped up warm' to go out before the hanging up of clothes to dry. Everything getting pulled off and dumped, dripping wet somewhere, a total nightmare! I never knew how they thought it'd ever dry thrown on the floor. I guess nobody thinks!
I'm glad you muddled through and had fun too. I hope you get your boiler sorted soon, I absolutely hate being cold. Our house - apart from loft insulation, is too old to have insulation in the walls (no space) and very high ceilings. When the boiler is off, the house very quickly turns cold.
Bravo with pulling off your dinner party. I once made Delia Smith's beef Stroganoff for a supper party and was horrified at the yellow hue emanating from the serving dish. Evidently far too much butter. It tasted divine though.
Tomorrow I'm going to try and do some more crochet, I'm trying to crochet a couple of daffodils ready to put inside 2 Mother's Day cards. A sort of 3D effect. I've done one, which I want to keep for myself, lol. Every year I leave crocheting a daffodil too late, this year I hope to be better organised. Have a good day tomorrow Christina. Cathy x

  4. It all sounds like loads of fun. The boys will always remember this as such a special treat. For you I hope you get a bit of ' "me" time. Hard to find in a houseful of people who have been together entirely too long. Have a great week.

  5. I was amazed to read that you were homebound for three days. We just had a good old fashioned nor'easter here in the states. I am in the middle of NY. and there was a state of emergency declared. Today everything is up and running and amazingly all the roads are clear! Helps that the temperature is in the mid 30s. Your picture of the back yard is what it looked like here except for the weight of the snow pulling all the branches down.

  6. I have thought of you each time I have watched the news. Looks like lots of fun had by all, the dinner sounds delicious. Hope you manage to get the boiler sorted, life without hot water and boys doesn't sound good!!! Hopefully normal services will resume by Monday and the snow will be long gone.

  8. Much of the same, and I am also thankful for no broken bones. It's melting fast here now, and pretty much back to normal. It sounds as if you've had a brilliant few days. Lots of happy snow memories made. Enjoy your Sunday, I hope there's a little sewing time for you, it would be very well deserved. Cricket nets start here today, if you can believe it! CJ xx

  9. The snow is so beautiful at first. But I remember those cold, snowy winters when the snow starts to melt and freezes into ice. Like you, I grew up with snow and school wasn't cancelled unless we had a blizzard. There so many places that can't handle snow. Sounds like you've had a wonderful time with family and friends. Enjoy your day, Pat xx

  10. It sounds like you've had a lot of fun in the snow! I'm glad you were able to have your dinner party, it must have been a lot of fun too. The boys look so happy in the snow, I'm really glad they had the chance to see a real heavy snowfall during their childhood. I grew up in a snowy place and loved the snow, but my kids haven't had much chance living where we do, and I regret that sometimes, in spite of liking so much about living here. Can't have everything, though. Nice post today, I hope you're having a good Sunday.

  12. I had to work from home on Friday too. I had marking so I hid in the spare room for a bit, i ended up sewing in there as well while pretending to take a long time to do marking! All in all we are not important people in the grand scheme of things so I always find snow days really relaxing - the world can just carry on with out me and I like that feeling. Would love to see some quilt progress. Thanks for popping over to my blog - I am so glad you saw some of your fabric pieces in the quilt. It is going to be a real celebration of all the lovely people who have helped to make it happen. Looking up hand tying quilts at the moment and I think I am going to go with that for a King Size. Stay warm. Jo xxxx

  15. You certainly have had a lot of snow, even more than we've had recently here in Nashua, NH. However, we are forecast to get a snowstorm by mid-week so winter is not over yet here. I was more than impressed that you and your husband backpacked to the grocery store and went ahead with the dinner plans and that menu sounded so delicious. And, of course, it was great not to forget the wine as well!

  16. We had a couple of snow days last week too :) School closed here at lunchtime on Wednesday as the snow arrived just after school starting and we didn't go back until Monday :) I could do with the same again this week really though, hehe!

It looks like you made the most of it!

  17. You are having or were having quite the adventure. We have had 9 snow days. This happens when you live in a rural area. It's best to stop the buses than guess. However, it seems that most of our snow days have been more like ice days. We ahvven't been sledding or sledging all winter.

  18. You certainly had plenty of snow! I think it's a source of high amusement to people in other countries how we only have to have a few flakes and everything goes to pot :) xx

  19. It sounds like you really made the most of the snowy weather. It was okay for about a day here and then just got slushy and wet.
