some sewing, ending with a little iPad tip

Life has been too busy to sew anything remotely challenging, like a shirt dress or similar. I am sticking to tried and trusted patterns for t-shirts. The output is not exactly amazing, I made a grand total of two new ones.

I used the Blank Slate Rivage raglan t-shirt pattern, which I have made a few times but never short sleeved. I like this pattern because it finished slightly lower in the back.

The first t-shirt was meant to be a all grey sparkly number but whoever cut the fabric of the bolt is not good with their measuring tape. I always order a metre for t-shirts because it is generally enough for the bodice and short sleeves. Alas, not in this case. No matter how much I tried, there was not enough fabric for the sleeves. At this point I had already cut front and back and there was no going back. I rummaged through my remnants and found a small piece of white knit fabric which I used. It is a shame because the two fabrics aren't the same quality, the sleeves are  bit flimsy and probably will lose shape quickly. You can see this on the first photo. I'll last the summer and when it is falling apart, it will be good for cleaning bikes. The sparkles are there, just not visible in the photo.

My second t-shirt is bright green. Summer is the time to wear bold and bright colours. I bought this fabric last year in Truro. I'll be remembering my last summer holiday when wearing it. The fabric is more substantial and I hope this t-shirt will last a good while. I just love this green.

Both were quick and simple makes. The sleeves have a sleeve band, which I might omit next time I make a raglan t-shirt. A simple hem will do and is much quicker. Now that I am a master of the double needle, my hems look quite professional and most people would struggle to tell that my t-shirts are made by me and not an underpaid and exploited worker somewhere in a distant land. Of course, if the t-shirt is turned inside out, it is more obvious, particularly because I can't be bothered with stitching in labels.

Ok, now on to a completely unrelated topic. I my last post, I asked if anyone knew how to insert photos from the Apple photo library in a blog post using the iPad. Thanks for your suggestions. It appeared that no, it is not easily possible and that some faffing was required. I like faffing but not with computers. I am however a master Google searcher and don't give up easily. I found an easy way, after digging a bit deeper. Here it is, in case you use an iPad for your blog posts. I am writing posts in my browser, even on the iPad. I use Safari because it is preinstalled. I have tried Chrome just because. I don't use a blogger app or any other app for it and I don't know if this tip would apply. When you click the insert image icon, what is missing on an iPad or iPhone is the option to "upload" images. This is what you would choose to insert images from your local photo library. To change this, you need to do the following:
  • On Safari: Hover over refresh circular arrow in the bookmark line. This will bring up an option "request desktop site". Choose this and hey pronto, when you now click the insert image icon, the "upload" option is magically there and you can choose photos from your Apple photo library, or any other place that you use to store your photos.
  • On Google Chrome: If you are using this browser, you need to click on the three little dots to the right of the bookmark line. This will bring up a menu. Scroll down to "request desktop version" and choose this option.
Let me know if this works for you. I am now confident that I can take my little nifty iPad everywhere, and write an illustrated blog post without pain.

Thanks for stopping by. Thanks also for the many virtual hugs sent to my mum. See you later!

  1. That is impressive.

As for Apple, iCloud drives me mad. I just may eschew Apple in future.

  2. I really love both tops! Sometimes quick, easy makes are the best. I actually really like the contrast of the fabric at the top, I’d call that a happy mistake. I’m planning on making a raglan top similar to these soon, it’s such a lovely style, and I have the fabric for a frankie top from Tilly and the Buttons book stretch cut out and ready to sew!

  3. I actually love the 2 toned shirt, it looks sporty, so bravo on making it work! Thanks for the suggestions on blogging on the iPad. It's so much easier to carry them on a trip than a laptop.. nice to know it can be done. Do you have keyboard for the iPad or do you use the virtual keyboard? ((hugs)), Teresa :-)

  4. I love that neckline on you - so flattering. It is a shame they are not the same weight fabric because I really like the colours together. I hate it when it looks like fabric has been cut with a knife and fork losing those vital inches. How is your crazy quilt going?

  5. Nicely done on the tops, they're lovely. I remember when I was little and my mother used to buy fabric, they always used to give you a generous bit extra. Doesn't seem to happen any more. CJ xx

  6. Both of your tops look fantastic. They're really nice on you. The green is great for summertime, as you say. I have been feeling really uninspired on the sewing front for a couple of years now, and would love to get back to it, but I'm finding fabric to be more expensive lately? Maybe it's just my tastes that are changing. I want to make things for myself, but I don't want to spend the money. I really should just bite the bullet, though. Hope you're having a good week, Christina!

  7. Your new tops look great. I'd never have known the gray one wasn't suppose to be two colors; it's perfect. Have a wonderful week, Pat

  9. Wonderful tops, Christina! They will be perfect for the warm summer days. I quite like the two tone shirt, but I know what you mean about fabric that isn't great quality. And it's frustrating that you didn't get sent the right amount of fabric.

  10. Thanks for the tip. I don’t blog from my iPad because it is just downright annoying. Will give it another go now. Love the t shirts.

  11. You are a very talented seamstress. Love the tops. I will try changing that setting on blogger when I’m on my laptop next and see if it works, although google photos seems to work really well and I like the fact I can put my photos in folders. B x

  12. You are certainly talented and solved the problem with the fabric so effectively, the two tone looks so impressive. Sadly your tips went over my head, technology and I are not a good mix.

  13. Hey Christina,
I wish life didn't get in the way of everything. It's quite vexing. The green top is a really lovely colour, and it suits you very well. I'm hoping that you're able to get on with some serious crafty business soon. Although I couldn't make a t shirt in a million years, so hats off to you lovely!

  15. Lovely tops for summer and yes, I favor the green one as well for its vibrant color, sort of like spring which has finally arrived here in New Hampshire - yeah! I have tried posting on my iPad without much success so I use my desktop and on occasion my older MacBook. Thanks for the tips and should I need to give iPad blog posting a try, I'll try to remember this info - not saying I will remember, but will try.

  17. Your T-shirts look fab and that shade of green really suits you. Somehow missed your previous post. I hope your mum is okay. Pets bring a lot of joy but boy do they bring a lot of tears, too.

  18. Thank you for the iPad tips Christina. I use the blogger app but it won't be supported by the next iPad update. So far I keep resisting the update but I know it's not a long term solution. Your tee shirts look fabulous x

  21. Both t-shirts looks great it is a shame about the fabric, I know some have different widths but I am the same I like to just get a metre for a tried and tested garment like a top. Lovely green colour I hope they last well for you. x

  22. You may call that simple I still think it's magnificent.. I could never make a t shirt or anything for that matter.
I have never tired to write a post via ipad. I have written them on my phone but then save them and come back to the laptop to add photos.
