after the weekend

Can you believe that we are already starting our second week of school? This summer holiday came and went and I barely noticed.

This term, just three of four are going back to school. Sam will be starting his university course in September. I thought I'd post the usual beginning of term photograph but Annie pointed out to me that the school logos are very clearly visible on this year's photo so you'll just have to imagine a smily group of three and one dog on our front steps.

It was only a three day week for the children, not a bad way to start a new term. James is now in P7, his final year of primary school. Alistair is not far behind in P6. Alistair's new teacher has the dubious honour of having taught all four of our children.... She'll be pleased to hear that he is the last of the famous four. Annie is studying towards her National 5 qualifications.

Our weekend was pleasant but the dread of Monday morning always lurks at the back of my mind.

We finally celebrated James' Birthday with his three best friends. Richard took them swimming, I made a cake and organised some treats. It was really just a play date with additional cake. After the swim and snack, the four were playing independently in and around the house. I think this type of party is better suited to James' personality. He gets easily stressed when he is at the centre of attention and he doesn't like party games much. The poor old chap was so exhausted that his bedtime was brought forward to 7 pm.

I spent some time playing with fabrics to plan Alistair's quilt. I mentioned previously that I don't like the chequered flannels I bought specifically for his quilt and I have moved the stack of fat quarters to a far corner of my sewing room so I would not be reminded of my failure to understand my youngest's fabric preferences. Alistair doesn't take much interest in the planning stage, unlike James and the older two. I put together a selection of not too crazy prints that I think Alistair will like. I feel the need for something a little calmer than the riotous colourful crazy prints that James chose. Alistair also doesn't seem to care much about the pattern and I decided to challenge myself with a curved design... Some ten years ago I bought a drunkard path acrylic template on impulse and I have done my best to ignore it since then. I am not sure why it is called that, it seems silly. I thought cutting would be challenging but it is fairly straightforward as long as I don't cut too many layers at once.

I have started building up my daily walking. I injured my left foot on a hill walk back in late May and it took ages to heal. It is now mostly pain free but I need to remind myself not to overdo it. I really want to go out jogging but I will not - not just yet. Added bonus of the enforced rest: my right foot plantar fasciitis seems to be under control. I started walking to work instead of cycling to get my feet back in walking mode. It doesn't take long to walk to work, maybe 30 minutes. I walk through the woods on the way there then along the canal on the way back. I took some photos along the canal. I think I might need to clean the lens, the photos seem a bit dreamy!

Days pass quickly. Just four more early starts before life slows down for the weekend once more. Have a lovely week. xx

  1. I was trying to work out how long I have been reading your blog because it seems no time at all since James and Alistair was just tiny wee boys and here they are nearly at the end of primary school. James's birthday celebrations sounded perfect.I admire you stitching a Drunkard path design. I don't think I would want to be stitching curves!

  2. I am impressed by the curves for the quilt, such beautiful fabrics. I was admiring the blackberries and must admit that is something I do miss. I have yet to come across blackberries here on the Island.

  3. I love your dreamy photos, well done for getting out there and increasing your walking. Hopefully you’ll be running before long. Sounds like a perfect birthday party. Low key is the way to go especially with boys. Scary that you have started the second week of school already. Mind you it still feels exceedingly autumnal here. Your curved patchwork sounds great. I look forward to seeing the results. B x

  5. I would love to walk with you! Your walks always seem so much more interesting than mine. I'm glad the birthday party was a success, that's the kind of party I would prefer too. I'm really looking forward to seeing your patchwork, it looks really interesting already!

  6. What an interesting design for a quilt, good luck. It seems like no time that your boys were little, time goes so quickly. I'll be glad when it gets cool enough here for me to start walking again. It was 95 yesterday so we have a ways to go.

  7. Happy birthday to James!
I love the colors you picked for the quilt. I've only tried very simple patterns (squares, triangles etc), so I'm really looking forward to see the final result.

  9. Happy Birthday, to James from me, too :-) His celebration sounded just right to me, too. I am so interested to see how the quilt will shape up...you are very brave me thinks; and I enjoyed viewing your dreamy photos! Bravo on the walking! I made it swimming twice last week and hope to make it twice this week as well. xx

  10. I love James' cake. It seems the kind of celebration that both my kids would prefer too. I also love your fabric and the fact that it is wonderfully ant free. I pulled some of mine of the shelf the other day only to find that thousands of ants had made a nest in it! The fabric is now washed and the ants are gone I'm happy to say. xx Susan

  11. *H*A*P*P*Y* * *B*I*R*T*H*D*A*Y*!*!*!* to James! The cake looks like it was a perfect one for a boy and his friends. Our boys don't start school for a week, next Monday. They're excited. It will be quiet around here then. ((hugs)), Teresa :-)

  13. Our back to school is always the Tuesday after Labour Day, which is the first Monday in September, so two weeks to go for our kids. Good lucj with the foot. Mine is in bad shape almost 30 years after a major sprain. It was not too bad for 20 years, and then ...

  14. Life sounds pretty busy around your home at the moment. So much going on. I admire you for making a curved quilt top. I have not got that brave as of yet, LOL. Your walk to work sounds lovely . . . through the woods and along a canal, they sound like nice places to ponder the beginning of your day and to unwind at the end before getting home :)
I am delighted that you are planning on making my Rose Cinnamon Buns. I think that you will be surprised how easy and how yummy they are :) Let me know what you think.
    Keep Smiling!
    Connie :)

  17. School doesn’t start for our 2 grandchildren here (RI) until after the Labor Day holiday weekend, which will be at the start of Sept this year. The birthday celebration sounded like nice low key event, so happy belated birthday to James.

  18. Wow your birthday cake looks great Christina. I think any child would love a cake like that. Happy birthday James! I've always done home parties when the boys were in primary school & before. In the seniors school it was more - some friends coming round to perhaps decorate a pizza and dip things into melted chocolate eg marshmellows. We'd been given a bagna cauda many years ago. I've only ever used it to keep the chocolate warm with it's tealight beneath it.
We've done a few bowling nights followed by KFC then a dvd at home & a sleepover. Trouble is when they chat & play xbox all night & don't do tge sleeping bit. Still they enjoyed it so... zzz later lol.
Lovely cat, I do love cats. All the best with your quilt, green remains my all time favourite colour but I like both turquiose and red a lot now.
    Take care. Cathy x

  19. I like this family rythm you describe. My kids are 15,17,19 years of age now and I teach in primary school so I can relate to the age span.We have celebrated many relaxed birthdays esp when the kids reach preteen. I sort of like it better this way. It's not stressful time for anyone and the kids have fun anyway!I walk to work as well but I quess you sort of have to because of your injury. All the best with your quilt,it seems to be your...thing and from what I see( curved) you are very talented and well equiped to make it easier. I never have ventured to quiltland but I do appreciate all the work put in making one. In Greece school only start on 11 September (too hot to consider earlier). We teachers begin in 3rd of September. A few more days!!!I have to say I took an instant like to your blog and I love Scotland which I have visited once.

  20. Glad the birthday went well. Good luck with the quilt, will look forward to the finished article. Great news about the walking, a really good platform for all kinds of fitness and just good in itself too. X

  21. Love that cake! Belated birthday greetings to your boy. You have a fantastic collection of fabrics. Interested to see the curved design quilt as I haven't a clue what that might look like. Good to hear you're out walking once again. (My foot bones are completely wrecked and currently waiting for a steroid injection which may help.) Have a great weekend.

  22. Oh, I can't wait to see this new quilt! I love seeing your sewing projects, they're always bright and fun - and I love that cake too! Hope your foot continues to make good progress xx

  23. Curved piecing, you are brave! I would love to try it but haven’t quite plucked up the courage yet! I think James’ birthday party sounds really nice; fun, but not overwhelmimg . Having suffered plantar fascitis I strongly sympathise, it is agonising X
