Sunday evening thoughts

I needed a bit of a break and have not visited here for almost 10 days. The wheels of life have been spinning too fast for me to hop on and off for a quick stop. Autumn has arrived fast and furiously and it has taken me by surprise. I was just about ready to pick elderflowers for a few bottles of spring sweetness but it appears that I have missed the opportunity. I made no jam this summer, not even a teeny tiny jar. Richard made a few jars of damson jam and plum chutney but our preserves shelf looks a bit sad. We'll just have to eat the less loved jams, jellies and chutneys that have been gathering dust. That and buying jars of summer in the shops.

We still have a few apples on the tree but most fell of during the first big autumn gales. The pears, too. We had been eating the apples one by one, on our way out or in but the abundance of windfall was a bit overwhelming and one tired evening last week, I peeled, cored, cut and dried what was in a big washing up tub in the porch. The dried apple rings are wonderfully delicious. Then I turned my attention to the windfall cookers but unfortunately burned an entire oven full of tart apples goodness to inedible crisps. Cookers make a decent dried apple snack because the little sweetness they contain ends up being concentrated and just noticeable. I lost interest in drying fruit then but have since idly queried the internet for advice on dehydrators.

Jack has been test sitting my growing hexagon quilt. He loves to sit on the back of the sofa, watching the world go by through the bay window. I think he approves of the growing quilt, although of course the paper is still in and there is no soft wadding and back. I am keen to finish this quilt, the top at least. I have sewn 497 hexies so far, just short of 200 to go. The wadding for Alistair's quilt has arrived and I might search my fabric box and linen cupboard for a suitable backing fabric.

What do you do with your arms when you are sleeping? I never much thought about it but recently, my arms have been bothering me during the night. I just don't seem to be able to get them in a comfortable position and I am awoken by pins and needles several times a night. Is it my ageing body? Have I accidentally swapped pillows with Richard? Turns out I have (I am that person who labels her pillows because I prefer bedding down in my own dried up dribble). I washed and dried the pillow and I am hopeful. My forearm is still not great, some days I can barely lift a cup of coffee to my mouth. I really am falling apart. Richard and I both are.

On that cheerful note, I shall say good night and return to my stitching. It is still early, still light but everyone is busy with their own thing and I allow myself to enjoy the evening. Have a lovely week xx

  1. I will only sleep on my own pillow too. I drool all night! Sweat too. We have very different pillows, so it's easy to tell them apart, but I don't want to sleep on his and vice versa. I hope you get better comfort in your sleep soon. We bought a new mattress recently because we were both waking up in agony on the old one. It was a big expense but it has made a massive difference to the quality of our sleep and how we feel when we get up, so totally worth it. Enjoy your stitching. :)

  2. Hi Christina - Jack looks comfy on the quilt. Kind of know what you mean about arms in bed but they only bother me on nights when I can't sleep. Xx

  3. I am possessive about my pillow too but I have to honestly say I've never thought about my arms when I sleep, except if they end up above my head and then they feel like jelly. I hope the break has helped and you are able to find some calm in the bustle. Your quilt is coming together nicely and the model looks very comfy. :) xx Susan

  4. I take my own pillow whenever I have to sleep anywhere other than home. It's got to be just right or I end up with kinks and soreness. Ugh! I hope having your own pillow back helps with your sleep. Your little dog looks most comfy upon your growing quilt there. Prime position it seems! Meg:)

  5. Hopefully having your own pillow will solve the issue. I got a new down pillow a while back and so did hubby, but he couldn't deal with how fluffy it was and returned it to the store.. so there's no confusing my big fluffy one with his flat one anymore. ((hugs)), Teresa :-)

  6. The quilt must be already comfy. I can tell by the way Jack enjoys it. :)

I hope your arms feel better soon Christine. Sometimes I feel a pain on my arms if I accidently sleep on it for several hours.

  8. Arms, eh? Well shoulders here. Both of them, and I'm a side sleeper. :(

  9. I think you should sleep with a pillow between your arms if you sleep on your side. IT will give you more support and not be so hard on your shoulders/neck. But that is the therapist in me coming out. I think your darling dog has wonderful taste in quilts.

  10. Oh yes, I too know about the arms thing. Never bothered me when I was younger but now I often wake with pins and needles in one of them. Such a lovely contented picture of Jack x

  11. Did my comment get through? Having problems again :o(. I love the photo of Jack and agree, time out is necessary sometimes. Hope all is well xx

  12. Experiencing the pins and needles thingy here, too. No idea what's causing it though, for me, these days it's a case of thinking I'm doing okay but then something else drops off. Hope your stitching isn't too affected by your arm probs.

  13. I sometimes feel I may be falling apart as well.. things have started to hurt.. I usually have my arms under my pillow.. which I think may be because I need a new pillow and this one is too flat so I am using my arms to prop it up.. I think my mattress also needs to be turned or flipped.. I want to buy a new one.. it's too soft.. M wants to keep it because its sooo soft.. lol

  14. Interesting what you say about your arms. I have been a bit uncomfortable at night as well, and one of my arms is painful when I lift it. I also have hip pain. I think it might be since I started taking iron tablets - I don't know if that's a thing. But anyway, I know what you mean about it being hard to get comfortable at night. I also have foot pain, a stiff neck and, this week, hand pain. And then there's the tooth... So, yes, I am also falling apart. The quilt is coming along nicely. I LOVE the bit when all the papers are taken out and suddenly it is soft and wonderful. Jack will like that bit too. Have a good week Christina, and I hope you're feeling in less pain now. CJ xx

  15. I name pillows and pillow protectors too! I also like my own towels so the labels get an initial on those too! I've been getting terrible pins and needles in the hand/arm holding a book lately, and it's driving me a bit made as it's something that's only happened in the year or so! I'm ok sleeping though... I hope you can find comfortable arm arrangements again soon!

  16. Up above my head, like a baby. Your hexies look wonderful. Every time I come here I want to start a quilt! But I have lots of other things to get done first. I will, however, follow suit and dry some apple rings. We have hundreds and hundreds of apples and I can't keep up with the windfalls at all. Normally I make apple butter and chutney, but I haven't found the time so far this autumn. Apple rings, though? I think I can manage some of those. Thanks for the idea! Hope your arms feel better soon.

  17. The quilt is looking amazing! The funny thing is we have been talking about the pins and needles problem here too, is there something in the air? My husband woke up with both arms dead and couldn't turn over. I have the same trouble when I lay on my front, also one day last week I had a crease from the pillow that went all the way down my face. It took over an hour to go so I had to leave for work like that! Getting older eh, not good.x

  18. Your hexi quilt is beautifully colourful. Sorry to hear your arms are uncomfortable at night. I haven’t experienced that, but generally sleep much less well than I used to, and always wake up earlier than I want to, and never feel fully rested. I think it is middel age. Soon I will be one of those pensioners you see fully dressed and spryly walking to the corner shop at 7 am for the newspaper. X
