October..... ing

:: Inspired by Jo's October...ing post, writing my own.

:: Walking Jack through torrential rains. He was rather indignant to be dragged out of the cosy house.

:: Chatting with my teenage son and his pal Billy who seems to prefer spending the weekend with us and not his own family when he is in town

:: Feeling annoyed that for two nights running, we are invaded by male teenagers with wet dirty shoes and no concern for my kitchen floor, or anything else. On the other hand, it is good to know that the boys are comfortable enough to hang out here.

:: Laughing about Jack, whom I found standing on my ironing board the other evening. I am not sure how he got up but he clearly didn't trust himself to go down the same way. I took this photo from a distance, whilst observing him.

:: Feeling relief after another relentless work at week. This week I learned that consumer satisfaction is more valued at my university than the student learning experience. A depressing thought.

:: Playing card games with Alistair. We've had this particular game since Sam was little. Winning involves a bit of luck, a sprinkle of risk taking and nerves made of steel. I rarely win, I am not much of a risk taker, not even in an innocent card game.

:: Stitching the final few hexagons of my first completely hand sewn quilt top.

:: Repurposing a few spare full hexagons to make them into half ones for gap filling.

:: Using the EPP glue stick my friend Jo sent me.

:: Eating bibimbap, a Korean rice bowl with vegetables, kimchi, a fried egg, tofu and spicy sauce. I love south East Asian food more than anything.

:: Wishing it would stop raining. Also wishing that I had taken some photos before the weather turned and that I had bought a winning lottery ticket.

:: Choosing a new book for book group. It is silly really but I do find this quite stressful. We are reading Pachinko by Min Jin Lee. The novel follows several generations of a Korean family through the 20th century, from the Japanese colonisation to war, to living in Japan and finally to witnessing the home country divided into two very different halves.

:: Listening to the radio because the telly has nothing to offer.

:: Feeling disappointed with myself because I use my phone more than I thought. I do listen to a lot of podcasts on my phone and hope the hour a day usage can be explained with this.

:: Imagining what I could do with the time spent on the phone.

:: Hoping for some reasonable weather because James and Alistair are booked into an outdoors holiday camp all of next week.

Have a lovely week! xx

  1. Sounds like a good month. I'm hoping you get your better weather. We're still too hot, in the 80;s.

  2. I loved it when the boys had their friends over when they were teenagers. I felt blessed they felt comfortable here, although they stayed many nights and that always involved lots of laundry with blankets and towels. Sorry about your long week, I had one also and there is no sense that it will let up soon. Take care my friend.

  3. Lovely to hear about your week and your life. I was wondering what the card game was? I loved card games but sometimes find it hard to get my grandchildren into them. Jean/winnipeg

  4. Love your Octobering. Work sounds like mine. I have two more weeks of notice to work but feel lighter knowing that there is light at the end of the tunnel. We worked at the farm in the train today. UGH! The girls spent the day in the cabin with the log burner and they were happy pups. Jo x

  5. You have had a busy week . . . it's not always easy raising teenagers and trying to get them to see things from our perspective. There are so many things that they just don't get until they reach an age in adulthood where they are going through the same things themselves. That's when they truly start appreciating Mom and Dad for all their love, patience, and sacrifices. When our daughter was a teenager we suddenly became very dump . . . and then when she grew up and started having children of her own, we suddenly became brilliant and the first people that she would come to for advice, LOL. It's funny how our prospective chances with time :)

  6. Ooh, that Korean rice bowl looks absolutely delicious. I like that sort of food too. You have reminded me that I need to start a new batch of kimchi. I dare you to choose a Jilly Cooper for book club. CJ xx

  7. Look at all those hexagons ... I can't wait to see a photo of your quilt when you flip those hexagons over! Fancy your little dog getting up on your ironing board. If our Labrador did that, all 48kg of him, would quickly buckle the board:D

  8. You have had quite the week, Christina. And despite the wet floors, you must also be glad to know your home is a preferred handout. I also wondered how Jack made it to the top of your ironing board and especially without toppling the iron. Hope you get some sun soon.

  10. Some lovely ings. Great fun to be playing card games with Alistair and Jacks antics made me laugh. I must get out of my rut with cooking, your Korean dish looks fab. I empathise with your work situation. Education is definitely not in a good place at the moment. Hope your week goes well. B x

  12. Lots of rain, board games, extra kids and me hiding from the noise has been all the rage here too. A Korean barbeque opened up 5 minutes walk from my place last year. I became addicted to bibimpap but haven't had it for awhile. I think I may have to meander that way for lunch tomorrow.. I believe I deserve it! xx Susan

  13. The quilt top is a wonderful achievement, looking forward to seeing it in all its glory. I did smile at Jack on the ironing board, really makes you wonder what possess's them to do things like that. Take it as a compliment that teenagers want to hang out in your home they obviously feel welcome and comfortable. I always used to think I least I know what they are up to...

It's a good thing that other children seem to prefer to hang out at your place.. even if it includes muddy boots..

  15. I did laugh at Jack on the ironing board and it's good that the boys feel comfortable to hang at at your house even if it means muddy boots and floors. Your quilt is going to be stunning.

  16. Sorry about the anon, bloody google blocking my comments as me again :o(. It's driving me mad.

Anyway, enjoyed this post, my favourite is Jack on your ironing board! I haven't shown it to Poppy for obvious reasons!! I completely agree about the customer satisfaction over learning, so short-sighted. I suspect it will swing back again as more and more people realise what a limited approach it is. Fab quilt! CT xx

  17. Hi Christina - kind of wishing for noisy kids making a mess instead of rather dull neater house! That Korean rice dish looks good.. I love hat sort of food. Xx

  18. Oh that boy of yours is so cute! I hope they have good weather for their camping trip. We're having a week full of sunshine, breezes and Autumn leaves here. That quilt is going to be a blue ribbon winner if there ever was one! ((hugs)), Teresa :-)
