an inconsequential dilemma

I am suffering from an acute case of indecision and it is driving me crazy. I have sandwiched my hexagon quilt and now I am unable to make up my mind about the quilting. I am tempted by straight lines right across through two corners of each hexagon. Direction and spacing are an altogether different problem.... Lengthwise, widthwise, diagonal? I also thought that I could follow the hexagon lines widthwise in alternate rows. I could make a hexagon flower pattern maybe? Follow the lines in the ditch? By hand or machine?

It is quite a nice problem to have but is is driving me potty. Of course it beats seeing the depressing news out there. Please help! What would you do? What have you done if you have completed such a quilt? Cxx

  1. Hallo Christina,
Dein Hexagon-Quilt gefällt mir sehr! Ich habe meine Hexagon-Quilts schon auf sehr unterschiedliche Weise gequiltet. In meinem Post vom 24.

  2. My mother made me a beautiful hexagon quilt and the quilting is in wavy lines - a bit like the contours on the map.
Funny, but I never think of you as indecisive :)

  3. I don’t feel qualified to suggest an option, other than could you perhaps try writing down the options and seeing if one jumps out at you? It might help clarify your thoughts x

  4. I've never truly made a quilt but I would probably go for the first/easiest option to come to me. That might not make me happy but it would get the job done. Otherwise I would stash it in the corner and stew on it for awhile hoping for some kind of miraculous inspiration. A few wines can help to make a decision at this stage... :) xx Susan (I hope other lovely people out there may be of a bit more help to you).

  5. I am a quilter, so.... I would just do a large meandering, "all-over" quilting pattern. My preference would be to not want the quilting to compete with the bright, colorful hexies. For some further ideas... can you view the quilting on some other hexy quilts? In person or online? Please post some pics when you are done!

  6. I think it might be against your logic nature but wavy lines might be the solution. If you try diagonal lines across the hexagons in the ditch it might not align correctly. I have seen a few wavy things over straight edges and it is always effective. Machine or hand? My machine quilting is appalling - so much puckering and rucking - but hand quilting with a dodgy arm could be a long haul. When I buy a long arm quilting machine we will be sorted!!! Just need 10K?? Love Jo xx

  7. I think I'd go with diagonal across the hexagons, and only every other one like you suggest. I shall look forward to seeing what you choose. CJ xx

  8. I love diagonal lines, but that is just me. And you know my sewing ability is pathetic so maybe you should look elsewhere for advice. Enjoy your weekend.

  9. There are quite a few ideas on the net on different quilting patterns for hexies. I rather thought this one was interesting. https://www.pinterest.com.au/pin/240450067582048197/ A lot of hexies do seem to be quilted on the diagonal but if the hexies are not aligned perfectly then that could be a bit problematic. I rather love the look and feel of a hand quilted quilt but that could perhaps send you even more 'pottier'. =)

  10. My recommendation is not the easiest, but it would be very amazing if you hand quilted it in the hex pattern inside each hex. The hex flower is a neat idea, too. Good luck! ((hugs)), Teresa :-)

  11. If your hexies are small I would certainly quilt them by hand. I love doing at least one quilt by hand each year. There is something quite gentle and soothing about the process. Other than that, you need to decide for yourself which way would be best for you . . . after all it is your quilt. And I might say, it is going to be so pretty, a true treasure.
    Happy November.

  12. I'm not an experienced quilter, so I hope you will receive lots of good suggestions from quilters who have made hexagonal quilts. 😊

  13. I'm sure it will be fabulous whatever you decide, I only hand stitched around the hex flowers on my little quilt, you have more experience so you will know what's best. The colours are a riot I want it!

  14. The sort of decision I am hopeless at making. I hope you have decided by now, but whatever you do I'm sure it will be wonderful x
