Saturday bliss
A blissfully quiet and peaceful Saturday is coming to an end. I have a huge pot of Bolognese bubbling in the oven, infused with half a bottle or red wine. It smells divine and I know we'll have at least one dinner planned for next week. I am craving real food. I can honestly say I have not eaten a proper meal since Monday, when I had a poorly tummy. I can't entirely blame the poorly tummy for Tuesday to Friday. It was a week of long days at work and additional commitments such as parent night, book group and an outreach activity for school kids. The good news is that orphan ingredients have been used up to create weird and (not so wonderful) meals for the youngest ones. The fridge got a good scrubbing before being filled up again.
Richard and Annie are away visiting family in England. Sammy is out celebrating his last weekend as a minor. I doubt he'll be out very long, he looked rather exhausted after a night coding something on Python, which his a coding language I think. Sammy wants to go for a birthday meal out tomorrow so that we won't cramp his style on Tuesday, when he will be 18. The provisional driving licence is ready for his first ever official pub outing and he can't wait to prove that he is allowed to order a beer.
I spent the morning walking Jack, sorting the laundry and writing a shopping list. The walk was lovely and I enjoyed my friend's company very much. She told me that she bumped into Sammy on the train, when she was travelling to or from town with her mother in law. I was so happy to hear that Sammy didn't pretend not to see them but sat with them and chatted all the way. He is good with the ladies. He'll steal the heart of any future mother in law, I am sure of that.
James, Alistair and I went for our messages and we now have fresh food for a few days. We also bought ingredients for Sammy's birthday cheese cake. They didn't completely drive me mad in the supermarket, which I call a success.
In the afternoon, the boys and I did what we each like most. James went out cycling with his friend, Alistair was binge watching Ninjago on the telly and I spent hours stitching beautiful neat lines on my hexagon quilt. I am using a purple disappearing marker pen to draw straight lines because I like my lines to be sharp. I listened to an entire week's worth of Woman's Hour programmes and also three weeks worth of The Inquiry. Both are BBC radio programmes that I really enjoy. It was the best afternoon I've had in weeks. I am full of creative energy and have plans to make some bits and pieces for various Christmas presents. I have the urge to make another v-stitch crochet blanket and have tentatively fingered my dwindling yarn stash.
Today, we ate like the kings. I made courgette fritters for lunch for myself and green soup for the boys from the freezer. This by the way is Annie's special green vegetable soup. I don't like it but everyone else does. Don't tell on me, please :-) For dinner I made chicken satay with coconut rice and two different salads. I can almost feel my guts get in gear with all the fibre and goodness not seen for days.
Now I am stretched out on the big sofa, which is usually Richard's preferred spot. I do rather enjoy it, the room feels different from this perspective. Shame there is nothing on the telly! Please forgive the boring post, but boring is good sometimes and I am utterly relaxed and quite content. Have a lovely Sunday. xx
Sounds more cozy than boring! Hope the rest of your weekend is great.
ReplyDeleteThat's not boring at all. Good food, doing things you love, and relaxing - sounds like an ideal weekend.
ReplyDeleteHave I missed something, who is Sammy? Glad you're feeling good enough to appreciate food again.
ReplyDeleteWe spent quite a bit of time bingeing on British telly over the past two days. We watched, actually re-watched, Unforgotten seasons 1 and 2. I see there is a season 3 but it hasn't made it to Britbox yet.
ReplyDeleteNot in the least boring Christina, just a lovely gentle blog post about family life... abit like your weekend really. Happy birthday to Sammy for next week xx
ReplyDeleteSounds wonderful, not boring.
ReplyDeleteSounds heavenly to me, rather than boring. I love the rare times I get to stretch out on the lounge and doze off or watch a favourite show. Meg:)
ReplyDeleteSounds like a blissful day, and everything nicely lined up for the week ahead. Children are murder in the supermarket aren't they. I am planning a top-speed trip there without them today in between football matches. The youngest likes to come along if he can, to persuade me to buy all of the things I don't really need. Enjoy your Sunday. CJ xx
ReplyDeleteA perfect post and I can almost smell that bolognaise from here. Yum. Sounds like you needed such a day to get back to normality. Hope the birthday goes well and you continue to have a relaxed weekend with lots of sewing. B x
ReplyDeleteI like a good homely post full of weekend relaxing pleasures. We've been watching the kids and grandkids and their friends help them move more of their things and their bed out of our house and take to their new house. I can't believe how much stuff went out. ((hugs)), Teresa :-)
ReplyDeleteHappy birthday to Sam and hope you get your fill of nourishing food this week. Nice to hear about your relaxing weekend my friend x
ReplyDeleteI think your weekend sounded just perfect especially after having a poor tummy and a busy week. Sam can't be 18 already can he? Mine are 25 and 21, of course the legal age here to drive is 16, but you can't order a beer until you are 21. Mind you you can go into the military and go to war at 18, but you can't buy a beer. It makes no sense at all. Have a great week.
ReplyDeleteA Saturday well spent! I hope your Sunday was just as good.
ReplyDeleteDid you drink the other half of the bottle of wine? I hope so as I won't feel bad about doing something like that myself then! xx Susan
ReplyDeleteIt sounds like a very good day was had by all. Hope the rest of your weekend panned out in much the same way.
ReplyDeleteI really enjoyed your "boring" post. It sounds like a slow/busy and fun day to me. I hope the rest of your weekend was good too. :)
ReplyDeleteSounds very relaxing. Am feeling hungry after the description of your bolognese. Have a good week. X
ReplyDeleteIt sounds like a blissful day – sometimes it's lovely to have fewer family members to take into account..! Hope your week has gone well and you've managed to eat properly :-) Sam xx
ReplyDeleteIt is good to recharge. I am feeling more confident about using a purple pen now you have said this because I never really trust that it will go away. How can life be so manic that I have not been here for a week!!! Anyway have a good weekend. Jo x
ReplyDeleteThis post didn't seem boring at all, Christina, and you sure did a lot of things and hope you are feeling better because the Bolognese will be better to enjoy.
