a very cold Thursday

Do you like the cold? I do and I don't. In the West of Scotland, temperatures rarely stay below freezing during day time. In fact, it rarely gets really cold because the Gulf Stream and warm atmospheric currents that keep the climate relatively mild. I always find this surprising, we are after all on the same latitude as places in North America and Siberia that in my (possibly uneducated mind) are literally the Arctic. It is cold but not as cold as in North America, that's for sure and for that I am grateful.

Yesterday my bike lock key broke in its lock and I had to walk to work. It was quite lovely actually, it is just a tad easier to pay attention to what is going on around you at walking pace. This morning, one of my brakes were frozen and I could only use one. I thought it would be wise to walk at least down the steep hill. I stopped to look a the view on my way to work. It was rather grey and misty but on close inspection, there was a lot of beauty to be found. Ice covers every surface at the moment. We don't have any snow. Later, the mist lifted and the sun worked its magic. It didn't warm the air but it made everything very beautiful and sparkly. I spent the day double wrapped in my baltic office. I do only have an electric heater to keep me warm, which is challenging on those few days it is proper cold outside. I probably looked quite silly with my hat and scarf, merino jumper and merino cardigan but I was relatively comfortable. I'll work at home tomorrow if the temperatures remain low. I hope it remains cold for a few more days, I like the crisp cold on a brisk walk with Jack. I don't like the damp cold that is sure to follow.

I don't have anything else to report, just wanted to share a few photos of the sparkling ice. I hope you keep warm if you are in the Northern Hemisphere, and cool if you are in the Southern Hemisphere.

Thanks for stopping by.

  2. I'm not crazy about winter, but summers are so hot here I prefer winter. Mac gets a lot done in the yard this time of year.

  4. Love the photos of the frost on the leaves. We're sweltering here and I just cut my walk with Patch short as it was just too hot to be enjoyable. I'm now happily sitting in the air conditioning and plan to stay put until I need to pick kids up. Enjoy the cool, I'm a little envious! xx Susan

  5. Isn't it something that we're having the Arctic Vortex in NE USA and poor Australia is having too much heat and fires? I feel pretty happy that here in Oregon we've had sunshine for the last few days and normal winter cold. Thanks for sharing your neat frosty images. ((hugs)), Teresa :-)

  6. Spring bulbs look foreign to me right now, but they are thriving, apparently, on our west coast.

  8. Yesterday was like living in a furnace. I felt ill with the heat here in Oz. At one stage thought I would pass out with the heat. Today is cooler, thank goodness with cooler temperatures. Summer is certainly shaking us with its temperatures this season. I wouldn't mind a bit of cold. Pity we can't have a bit of noth your and our seasons to tone it diwn a bit. Keep warm, regards, Robyn

  10. Its amazing how warm compared to some it is here too. Sadly the winds bring the temperatures down but it is only in the short term. In truth we are having quite a mild Winter. You photos are beautiful I took some of our daffodils starting to emerge through the icy ground and icy puddles yesterday. Hope you manage to keep warm in your Arctic office.

  11. We woke to a snowfall this morning and i’ve Had a lovely walk with a very excited dog. I don’t like the mud that follows but i’m trying to be mindful and enjoy it as it is now! I do like to be warm and well wrapped up though

  12. Give me cold weather any day. In fact, let me live in Narnia (I love Turkish delight, too!). Just a whisper of snow here in the north east this morning but enough to give me an excuse to put a coat on the dog.

  13. I am definitely a cold weather person. It’s the wind I can’t take. We are lucky, our dog likes the cold weather too. Snow brings out the puppy in him. Stay warm, Lisa

  15. Oh pretty, pretty, pretty. It always amazes me as well that we're on the same latitude as Siberia. It's been a bit on the nippy side here today, but not in the same league as North America. I've been enjoying coming home from the dog walking etc. and warming up. Blissful. This evening I am contemplating yarn, being nearly at the end of a scarf. What next? Happy decision making. Have a lovely weekend. CJ xx

  16. I like watching snow as long as I'm warmly inside. :)
We had several cold (very cold for my area) days, but it is supposed to warm up again next week.
Stay warm Christina. Have a wonderful weekend.

  17. Your photos are beautiful. Not that cold here but it sure was up north. Still we had some chilly days where I had to wear a fleece or sweater, I love that. Have a wonderful weekend.

  18. When I first arrived in the north of England as I student I froze. People kept telling me that as a Scot I should be used to it. I kept telling them about the Gulf Stream and how my island had palm trees. 25 years later my husband, who I met then, still likes to tease me about the Gulf Stream.
Mind you I could have done with it in Chicago this week, minus 40 with wind chill.

  22. Sorry to read about the bike issues, but on the other hand, it gave you a chance to get these photos to post. I do like the cold as long as I don't have to spend too much time outdoors in really frigid weather. Walking does provide more opportunities to really see things as you said.
