a new hotel is opening in the neigbourhood

At the time of typing this paragraph, there are six teenagers is the house. Three are camping out in Annie's bedroom, three in a tent in the garden. It has been a constant coming and going here and I wonder if maybe we are a bit too welcoming? There are also three pre-teens in the house... Do you think I should start charging hotel rates for towels, bedding and meals?

The weather forecast was abysmal for the Bank Holiday weekend and we cancelled our camping trip. We recreated the camping spirit on Friday night with an impromptu BBQ with all our camping friends. It was a lovely night and I we were all glad to be sleeping in our own cosy beds, comfortable in the knowledge that any nighttime wanderings to the loo would not require wellington boots, rain coat and storm lamps.

We used the time not spent keeping warm by gathering wood and huddling around the campfire wisely. Richard finally hung pictures that have been sitting on the dresser in the spare rooms since September 2016. We had a large picture wall in our old dining room and opening up the space when we built the extension meant that we lost quite a bit of wall space. We hung our favourite art but there were some less loved pieces that we chose to ignore. They were all given a wee wall space now in our spare bedroom, where Richard recreated our picture wall with what was left. A photo collage that Richard received for his 40th Birthday is also finally hanging on the wall. Richard has celebrated his 50th Birthday a while back. We do take our time in this house. He also took all the accumulated crap to the recycling centre and charity shop. The room is more inviting now and it needs to be because Sam offered the room to a University friend in August. He'll stay until they find an affordable flat to share with two more friends. Ideally with a pool table and a live in cook :-)

We made space for a family gallery in the hallway outside our shower room . This is a much travelled hallway and well lit, too. A good spot to look at family photos I think. We have a small selection of framed photos that have also been gathering dust in the spare room and I have some photos in mind that I would like to add to the collection. I aim to have this done by the end of the year.

I made peace with the proportions of my new quilt top. In fact, the size is perfect for the spare bed. I did a bit of leisurely browsing for perfect quilt proportions (thanks Jane for the tip). There is a golden ratio that can be applied to rectangle quilts but it makes for an even longer and narrower quilt than I already have. Common sense prevailed, the perfect quilt proportions for me are those that please my eye. I am feeling much relieved. I ordered some fabric for the back and to join them, I pieced some smaller remnants together on Sunday afternoon.

Richard and I went bathroom shopping on Bank Holiday Monday. Neither of us likes this kind of shopping but needs must. We have been unable to find a plumber/small local business to fix the plumbing and renovate our shower room. It appears that these chaps can't be arsed calling back and if they do, they won't have time until November 2031 to come out for some measurements. The one plumber that did come never produced a quote and we have not heard from him in weeks. End of rant. We went to exactly one bathroom shop, a national chain that does everything. We had a wee wander around the showroom, saw some nice things, picked up a catalogue and made an appointment for someone to come out, take measurements and work out a design according to our specifications. This week. Yes, this week. If we like the design and the quote, a surveyor will come out to make sure it is actually do-able and check measurements and existing plumbing. Free of charge up to this point. I am moderately optimistic that our leaking shower room will be fixed this year - albeit at a high cost.

European election - what can I say? I voted Green as I usually do when I am allowed to vote. The Scottish Greens didn't win a seat. I see here that the Scottish National Party with three seats is lumped in with the Greens in Europe, I am ok with that and I am glad that Scottish interests are represented in Europe (long may it last, Europe that is). Despite its unfortunate name, it is a party that has greener credentials than many and Mrs Sturgeon (the Scottish First Minister for those readers not familiar with her) has more integrity than any of the big names in politics in the UK at the moment. On a similar note, the Conservative leader contest fills me with dread.

It is Monday evening now and you'll be pleased to hear that at the moment, only one additional teenager is in the house. It is mercifully quiet and I am enjoying it very much. Back to work tomorrow.

Have a lovely week. Thank you for stopping by and saying hello.

  1. Well done you for all of the hospitality. A shame your camping trip was rained off, but good you got to spend time with your friends anyway. Green voting here as well. I am contemplating a crochet blanket having seen a lovely one in action today at a cricket thing that lasted for over six hours - I had plenty of time to admire it. But I only really have one crochet stitch. I wish I could do all that fancy up and down ripply chevrony stuff, or granny things, but it is double or with a bit of a stretch that half treble (is that what it's called?) all the way. I have looked at lots of pictures, but somehow I haven't miraculously soaked in the knowledge to make them. CJ xx

  2. I think Conservative leaders fill many with dread in many places these days. I say this as one who has voted conservative.

  3. I think you are a saint to have so many extra young people at your house. One way to get rid of them is to give them a broom and have them wash the dishes. LOL! I hope your election turns out okay. We're stuck with the absolute worst "president" in the history of the universe. If he gets re-elected I will lose all hope for the future.
    ((hugs)), Teresa :-)

  5. Well done you for your fortitude with the teens although if they start asking for room service then it maybe time to shut the hotel down :) Also glad to hear you're feeling happier with your quilt. I'm looking forward to seeing the end product. xx Susan

  6. I’m smiling at your post and thinking that you must have a very welcoming home. Just think of the fortune you could make if you charged bed and breakfast rates. Good plan to cancel camping. We have been staying in your corner for a few days and the rainfall has been interesting. Very Scottish. Good luck with your shower room, I’ll keep my fingers crossed that it is finished this year. Have a good week. B x

  7. How busy you've been! What a shame you had to cancel your camping trip, but it certainly seems as if the teenagers enjoyed it at your house! I have lots of pictures, but don't seem to have anywhere to hang them either. Best, Jane :)

  8. Wow, I am so thankful that the days of young people taking over the house are long gone. Although, thinking back now it does make me smile so it can't have been that bad. Hope the plans for the shower room go OK.

  11. We've been away over the bank holiday weekend in Derbyshire. We had 5 teenagers (inc my 2) plus me & husband in our 2 berth caravan. There were tables and chairs in the awning but... it wasn't always warm - mixed weather & we had an electric hook up with a kettle. The teens all love tea & coffee (except teen 1 girlfriend) in a big way. They slept in their own tents and we didn't feed them all thankfully. They just arrived for tea & chat, it was good but I did say 'enough' after 'too much' toilet joking!
    Beautiful photos. Cx

  12. Sometimes the best holidays are spent being at home and yours seems to turn out well, Christina. I was fooled by the post title and expected to really read about a hotel🙂 And I know about procrastinating about hanging photos as I have several frames to complete and display as well. When we first relocated to our former VA home we had a very hard time finding a reliable contractor, but luckily finally did.

  13. It's wonderful that the teens feel comfortable enough to want to spend all their time at your place.

  14. You deserve a sainthood. I used to hate it when my girls had friends sleeping over and could never relax properly until they had gone again. I'm glad you've come round to liking your quilt - I thought it was gorgeous. Shame about the camping, but it sounds as though you had great fun anyway. Good luck with the shower room. I know how infuriating it is when workmen never get back in touch - we had a similar problem when our roof needed fixing. I took great satisfaction in slating them on Check-a-trade! :0) xx

  15. I had to read back to see your quilt and I hope mine is going to be half as good as yours. I am only on block 6 so I have about 10 to go. My parents were the ones who let everyone stay at our house and I wondered how they suffered it and then when I was an adult they said they didn't mind because they always knew where we were! I am glad you are going to Turkey, I have never been but Andy has and it will be good to visit family. Jo xxx

  16. Lovely photos, so much colour. Hmmm, do you find that the teenagers always seem to congregate in the same place? i.e. your house? I had this problem when my two were younger, I'd feed them, house them, sleep them, but it wasn't often reciprocated, I don't know if other parents weren't open to having a house full of kids or I just made it too welcoming at my house, they never wanted to go home. Still, I didn't really mind, I was glad that my kids felt at ease to bring their friends home and spend time here. We went bathroom shopping at the weekend too, and kitchen shopping, just ideas at this point but we'll be having both done in the not too distant future.

  17. Our politics have to be worse than yours, I mean they can't get any worse that this. I love yor flowers and hope you get that bathroom renovated just the way you want it.
