wardrobe staples (or not)

I made two t-shirts for the summer. One I love, the other not so much.

The first t-shirt is a tried and trusted pattern of mine, the Concord t-shirt by Cashmerette. This pattern company is great for women with big chests and tummies. Bums also but that's not so relevant for this t-shirt. I have made this many times and recently reprinted a smaller size of the pattern. I always make the scoop neck because I love this neckline. There is a v-neck and a crew neck option, too. The fabric is a rib knit, which is a bit unusual for a t-shirt but I really like it. I was a bit worried about the neckband because the fabric has quite a lot of stretch. It was no problem at all, the neckband sits flat and is neat. I should maybe make a size smaller if I use this type of fabric, the result is not as snug as I like it for a t-shirt. This particular version is a bit too long, which struck me as strange because previous version weren't. I checked the pattern and noticed that I had cut the length of the largest size, at least 5 cm longer than my size. How strange. Rounder people are not necessarily taller, just rounder. It reminds me of the duffle coat I made a few years ago. Whoever graded the pattern for larger sizes did so on autopilot because the hood for those sizes was gigantic. Round people's heads are actually quite normal sized... But I digress. Reds are so difficult to capture on camera! This particular shade is a proper raspberry red, not ketchup red as it appears on the photo.

The other t-shirt is from a new to me pattern designer, Itch to Stitch. It is the Isidro top, which looks really lovely with the gathered neckline and the butterfly sleeves. The pdf pattern pieces fit together really neatly, which is always a bonus. The construction is easy enough although it has a weird armband thingamajig that somehow covers the seam attaching the sleeves to the bodice. I didn't do that because I couldn't be bothered Of course I should have listened to the designer, the armhole is gaping so much that the seams are clearly exposed. That and a not inconsiderable amount of pale squishy flesh. It is a shame really because I do love the shape but the gaping armholes make me want to squeeze my arms to my body. The hems are quite narrow. This works fine for the sleeves but it rolls up and over on my hips. I don't think I am going to make a second one. The fabric btw is a viscose jersey, which is really soft, light and drapey and very comfortable to wear. I know I could adapt the pattern but I don't think I can be bothered. I have a few nice t-shirt patterns and it seems a poor investment of time to make one fit perfectly that I don't like all that much. I live and learn.

Making quilts is so much easier, not fit issues or anything....

And that's what I'll be doing this weekend, sandwich the postage stamp quilt. I made a back from two pieces of grey and a strip made of small pieces of scraps. James and Alistair are on Scout outings all Saturday, which means I have LOTS of time.

I'll maybe also do something with my hair, what a mess it is. What I mean is that I'll practice with the hair dryer and brush. My new undercut is a bit more adventurous than usual and it makes it difficult to look professional on the few occasions that I have to pretend I am a proper grown-up.

What have you been making lately? As always, thank you for visiting. It is lovely to read your comments xx

  1. I just lurve the red t-shirt. I love ribbed fabric as I'm a really skinny little bird with no body shaping ( no bosom or waist ) Being only 4'8" even girls clothes can look to big on me. Slightly fitted styles give me a bit of feminine shape. Yoke gathers make it look like I have a bit of bosom too LOL Best, Jane x

  2. I think both shirts look lovely and really suit you, although I can see what you mean about the armholes on the second one. They would annoy me too. I think your hair looks fab. Enjoy your weekend of quilting. xx

  3. Sounds like a wonderful weekend planned, quilting a great way to relax. Love the tshirts. I can never get a pattern that fits me properly so have give up trying to make clothes for myself. That said, I have to alter most things that I buy due to been so short 4' 11" so realistically it would make more sense to make them.

  4. I like your red t-shirt, though I'm not a lover of clingy clothes. I don't like baggy either so am hard to please. At 5'11" with long arms and legs, small boobs, I always find difficulty buying clothes anyway. I like some shape but don't want attention drawn to it. Enjoy your quilting. Cathy x

  5. The little necklace (is that the right word?) goes perfectly with the first top.

  6. I’m really impressed. For me it’s very hard to sew a neat neckband, especially with t-shirt material. You did a great job. I love both tops, but the red one is my favorite too.

  7. Nicely done Christina, you always make such a lovely job of t-shirts, I can well imagine how difficult they are. The raspberry one is particularly good. Your weekend ahead sounds blissful, I hope you enjoy. I need a hair plan, what I have is basically a disaster. CJ xx

  8. They both look lovely, but I understand the issue with gaping armholes. Would a low cut lightweight vest top under it work? The front is so beautiful it seems a shame not to get to wear it.

  9. The tops are lovely, I really like the red rib fabric!

  10. I really think it's terrific that you can make your own clothes. I never got super comfortable with a sewing machine. I do have a cute little Featherweight Singer, though. My making is on my Dune blanket by Lucy at Attic24. Have a super weekend. ((hugs)), Teresa :-)

  11. Well you look lively in both of them. I would throw on a tank top under the gaping armhole t-shirt and wear it with pride. I am not that great at sewing so for me it is a total win.

  12. Ahhh live and learn. At least you now know what you like best. Since I am not a seamstress I am ever so impressed that you are! I am still knitting a baby blanket. Hope your quilt is well sandwiched today :) xx

  13. I'm a t-shirt girl but have never tried making them because the adjustments in the bust area were just too confusing when you really need to do a fair bit of adjusting! I might just have to check out the link for the raspberry top pattern and finally give it a go. Enjoy your quilt sandwiching. xx Susan

  14. Like both the shirts, Christina, but the red one a bit more. Perhaps if the second, gray one, was in a different color you might like it ? It just seemed a bit dull and not fitting you in terms of color. And I do envy your being able to make your own clothes.

  16. You go for it on the quilt. I am on square 10 so I am a long way off. I really like the red one and I think you could definitely go down a size. The whole of the grey one not so much but the gathered neckline suits you. Could you put normal sleeves in the gathered one? Or would the armholes need re shaping? Meh, dunno I suppose it is all about time! Enjoy playing with your hairdryer!!!!
