Finally, March

This must have been the longest February yet, so glad to wave it goodbye. The first day of March proves to be as miserable as most of February but there is always hope. There were a few hours of sunshine, or at least bright skies throughout the month but not enough to brighten my spirits.

I bought Jack a new toy, a long red and black snake with squeaky segments. Jack has been trying to kill and eviscerate it for days. So far, the snake is surviving but he is one persistent snake killer. Long toys are his favourite kind because we can play tug of war. We used to get "roadkill fox" at Poundland but unfortunately the shop has closed down. We called it roadkill fox because it was a flat long fox that Jack really really loved. Many times over.

I started knitting a new jumper, the Mailin by Isabelle Kramer. This has been in my Ravelry queue for a long time, years actually. After knitting too many jumpers and cardigans with sock weight yarn, I really needed something that knitted up a bit quicker. I treated myself to Cascade 220 yarn, the shade is Colonial Blue. It is an odd name for yarn, don't you think? Funny detail, it is almost exactly the shade of our little sofa, the one with the blue Tweed cover.

Do you use Bloglovin? I have picked up at least 30 followers lately, all offering dates and more with young s**y girls. I don't know what those people think, is anyone in their right mind actually going to follow them back and find love that way? If only it was possible to block those people.

My running beginner's group is continuing to be fun. I am still in the slow group but I am good with that, I have no particular goal in mind other than being fit and healthy. I really like my coach. She is very good at motivating me to run up those hills, pumping my arms and all. She is also very keen on us keeping a steady pace. She is really keen for me to join the "big" club, thinks I am ready but I can't quite imagine how I would keep up, or even manage an entire training run. I've seen their training schedules, it is punishing and contains words like "tempo run" and "pace charts" and stuff like that....

Work continues to be challenging. I am developing a new course and I am stuck with the first teaching week, just can't get my head around it and it stresses me out big time. The clock is ticking. We have to deliver teaching material including recordings to our e-learning technologist a minimum of two weeks ahead of time, for editing and transcription. My lectures are turned into something that looks like a fancy website with interactive elements once the e-learning technologist is done with it. It is so much easier to just show up in a lecture theatre and hope for the best with a lecture that was finished minutes earlier....oh those good old days when I was still standing in front of a class.

I have lost my barely adequate parent status this weekend. Several reasons but the main one is that I made the mistake of sorting through the washed and dried laundry pile and making piles for each of us. I thought it would make Annie's chore easier. Alas, not. I made the unforgivable mistake of putting Richard's t-shirt on her pile. I know, how could I. I am not allowed to do the sorting as I had made that same mistake previously. Gosh, she doesn't give second chances.

Alistair needed new school shoes and Astros for football. We went to the closest shopping centre, which I hate but I really hate all shopping unless it is for fabric or yarn, or maybe gardening things. The place was heaving with people, whole multigenerational families enjoying a spot of shopping. Alistair didn't believe me that people go there for fun and not because they need something. I think we are a weird bunch but I really can't imagine every going shopping without actually needing something.

On the whole, the weekend was pleasing. I listened to 8 hours of Stephen King's The Institute while pottering around, cleaning and knitting (and sorting the laundry). My children are rarely interested in talking to me, or play a game. I guess they are growing up fast and this is the way it has to be. I am happy with that and they know where I am if they need me.

How was your weekend?

  1. Damn you for messing with the laundry sorting piles, it's shocking behaviour. I ventured to the mall with the middle boy yesterday, it was horrific as you say. We bought a pair of trainers, ate cake and came home. Good luck with the new course and well done on the running, I am all sorts of impressed. Bert has that snake only in pink and purple. We call it Pink Snake. It is the one thing he has not managed to destroy. Yet. It comes out of the toy box when he is exhibiting challenging behaviour. Wishing you a good week. CJ xx

  2. I am LOVING your new haircut! It is brilliant. I wish I had thick hair so I could cut it short and just go with it, alas my hair is thin and not very nice. Still I think yours is amazing! Really what kind of a mother are you to sort out laundry and put Dad's shirt on your daughters pile. Retched!

  3. Really liked the new hair style, Christina, and it looks easy to style, my favorite kind of "do." I suppose you are permanently out of the sorting cycle and thank goodness you didn't have to do it in Harry Potter's world. Our weekend was a quiet one with household chores and meeting friends for dinner at a local restaurant. Kudos to you on the running achievement. You are a better woman than I am.

  4. Good job on the haircut! I have long hair and have been toying with the idea of cutting it short but I'm afraid that if I don't like it it will take eons to grow it back. I guess you should count your blessings that your daughter has taken over a chore from you and now you will have a good excuse to never do it again.. until you have an empty nest. ((hugs)), Teresa :-)

  5. I’m looking forward to the better weather promised for mid March. Bloglovin is a pain and if you had a look at my followers you would see the same problem too but no problem with them commenting yet. How else do people follow? I don’t want all my blogroll in my email box. Congratulations on finding a way to delegate sorting the washing to someone else in the family!

  6. I really enjoyed reading this, got quite the chuckle out of the description of your shopping, heaving with people, just so accurate. Your hair looks great. I'm currently growing mine out long after having a similar haircut, after seeing a photo of myself mid 30s with long hair. Somehow i feel I'm chasing an unattainable goal here, seeing as that was about 15 years ago. Oh well, worth a try. Great job with the running too.

  7. Sue does the laundry, and I often find a little present in my pile once she has sorted it. Last night it was a pair of her socks, but recently, I actually put a pair of her slacks into my cupboard along with my tees. When I discovered it, she said that she had been wondering where it went.

  8. Cute, cute, cute haircut! Really love it! You should mess up more jobs so your kids will take them over for you! :)

  9. I think I need to try that with my laundry and see if someone else will take on that job for me! I have the same problem with bloglovin it is a pain isn't it. I too wish it was possible to block them. I like Cascade 220 yarn, I have used it for several projects, I agree its an odd name.

  10. I too like your new haircut. :)

I have heard of Bloglovin, but haven't used it. I already have too many accounts and passwords, so I am trying not to have new apps and accounts unless it is absolutely necessary. :)

  11. You are so funny. I always enjoy reading your blog.

  12. I am so entirely with you on SHOPPING! I can't stand it - especially malls! Craft shops yarn fabric, even the occasional home supply store are okay but ugh - not a desired experience. As for Bloglovin, I have used it but don't prefer it. I still read via feeds on Internet Explorer -a very old version that I keep on my computer only to read the blogs I follow... Can't wait to hear your review of The Institute.

  13. Like the look of that book pile (I've only read the Ishiguro one which I loved). Hope the course and lecture planning (I don't miss that one bit) is going well. Looking forward to seeing the finished sweater, the yarn colour is lovely. And the shorter hair style really suits you. I wish I looked that good after a run. Actually, I wish I could run.

  14. I’m totally with you on the shopping for fun thing... it is beyond my comprehension! My stepdaughter told me she was going to our local shopping centre on Saturday just for something to do. Why? It’s crowded, impossible to park at the weekend and the shops are full of stuff we don’t need. It would be my worse nightmare! I love the new haircut!

  16. Ha! I'm with you Christina why do people do recreational shopping? Do they not have other things to do? I'm glad to hear you are enjoying your running, things don't have to always be competitive it is sad that so many people think they have to be. Enjoy the weekend. x

  17. Loving the new hair. Looks great and must be easier for running. We don't shop for fun either, I did when I was 20 something and half the day ended with an afternoon in the pub but not now so much unless I am on holiday strangely!! Hope you have had a good week. Jo x
