March... ing

Does anyone feel the whoosh of time as it whizzes past you? I listened to an interesting podcast the other day, it was by the Naked Scientists and to topic was "Time: it's all relative". I think it was broadcast just for me.

Knitting most days. Big needles make such a difference, my Mailin jumper might be finished before the next winter.

Cooking and baking - rarely and not at all. Annie and Richard are in charge and at most I get to make sandwiches for the boys. I am not sure how I feel about that but for now, I am good. Next week's menu plan include lentil soup with rolls, chicken fajitas, vegetable curry and cottage pie. I think I am down to make the lentil soup.

Listening to "The Institute" by Stephen King. I had forgotten just how good a writer Mr King is. This is a slow book but one that is difficult to put down. I just finished, what a rollercoaster. It was an 18 hours long book, excellent value for money.

Watching 24 hours in A&E. It is interesting, educational, gentle and never sensational. I like the human stories, both of patients and staff.

Deciding on a border for my Ice Cream Soda quilt. I find it very difficult to make simple decisions like that but eventually (after weeks of pondering) narrowed it down to two, remnants of a blue Chambray and the remnants of my red Liberty Birthday fabric. And then I went and cut into a large piece of orange flowery fabric destined for a dress and made it into binding.

Also trying to decide if I should join the big boys and girls running club. Our beginners group duplicated one of their training sessions*. It nearly finished me off and I was a bit wobbly on my legs for the following two hours and in fact two days later, my body still felt a bit achey.

Ironing one of Richard's shirts and realising it used to belong to my dad. He died almost 18 years ago and seeing that his shirts are still used brought a lump to my throat.

Scrubbing my favourite (only) filthy footstool with soap and water. I have been meaning to do this since before Christmas. Jack the mucky pup rubbed plenty of mud in it and once something is a bit grubby, it seems to attract more dirt. I'll do the same with our armchairs over the next few weeks.

Renewing Sam's phone contract. Next time this is due, he will be fully fledged and earning his first graduate salary. Fingers crossed.

Itching to to go in the garden and clean up the mess. It is far two muddy unfortunately.

What are you up to these days?

*For those interested in running, the session was a 2 km warm-up (!!) followed by something called out-and-back (15 minutes out, then turn around and run back taking 30 seconds less to cover the same distance). The warm-down was the same as the warm-up but in the opposite direction.

  1. I am envying you your willing chefs, you are SO lucky. I am really not enjoying food at all at the moment. The orange quilt binding is scrumptious, I do so love the binding part of a quilt. Love that your dad's shirt is still being used. We have a coat here that belonged to someone long deceased that is still worn, and just the other day I was reading a blog where a partner's late father's duffel was still going strong. Wonderful. Hurray for clothes that last. Wishing you a lovely week. CJ xx

  2. Today was clean up the yard day even though that was not my intention. I would love a sit down and knit day but those seem like they never happen. Have a wonderful week my friend.

  3. I am also envying your chefs, I must be going wrong somewhere. That orange binding is wonderful, it looks perfect. I have been watching Emergency Helicopter Medics I might try 24 hours in A & E too as it sounds very similar. My garden sounds just like yours. The rain seems to have abated now so I might manage a potter out there in the next week. Hope you have a good week.

  4. "Also trying to decide if I should join the big boys and girls running club."

I am pleased that you wrote this. Yesterday, I came across an exchange in which one man took offence at another man writing "girls" and not "women."

It's just the way we talk with no slight intended. In fact, I think it can be complimentary.

I may include this in a blog post someday. :)

  5. I would love to have someone else in charge of the cooking and that menu sounds delicious. I'm longing to get out in the garden too, but it's so wet out there at the moment that it really wouldn't be worthwhile. X

  6. I wouldn't be upset if there were 2 others in our household who wanted to plan menus and do the meals as well, alas it is only 2 of us. My husband has complained that I "hog the kitchen" so this week I am graciously allowing him to do some of the meals and he actually does enjoy it. And I enjoy him doing it! Warm spring-like day today so I was out for a walk; running is not my thing.

  7. I agree with feeling that time is flying by.. it goes faster the older you get. You're lucky to have other cooks in the family. Whatever will you do when Annie goes off to college? Enjoy your week. ((hugs)), Teresa :-)

  8. I know what you mean about time! Can’t believe it’s already March.

I wish I had someone to cook for me, at least once in a while. 😊 You are lucky. 😀

    Have a wonderful week, Christina.

  9. Hi Christina, What a wonderful post. You are such an excellent writer. I am impressed with all of your cleaning. I would be careful with that exercise class. I used to dance and push my body to extremes. I had to have both hips replaced.

  10. It all sounds good (maybe not the wobbly legs). I scratched that itch and spent some time tidying in the garden the other day, filling the green bin in the process. I don't know what came over me. Enjoy the rest of the month.

  11. I like how you all share the cooking that doesn't happen here but then I do like my own cooking, a rest now and then might be nice though. I love seeing glimpses of your quilts they are always a riot of colour. When I was young I used to read a lot of Stephen King but I stopped as a lot of it was horror and that is not good for me (overactive mind-no sleep). I did really enjoy his book On Writing. x

  12. I wish I had a team of people willing to take over the cooking! How wonderful that Richard still wears your father’s shirt. As for what I’ve been up to... I have started a rag rug for our hallway after teaching a class last week, which is probably a bit foolish as I still have two sleeves to knit on my current knitting project. Mind you if we all end up self isolating at least I have plenty to keep me busy. I hope you have a good weekend Christina x
