Saturday morning tidbits
This working week really flew by. I took a day off work on Friday. I knew I had to catch up with teaching stuff for a couple of hours but I didn't mind that. I can compensate for this another time. My work is beautifully flexible.
I really enjoyed pottering around the house yesterday. I washed bedding, then watched it move gently in the still warm air outside. I listened to the kids doing school work under Annie's watchful eye. I helped Alistair with his P7 project (a piece of
I also spent some time sewing. The jacket that I am making is dark blue and I can only really work on it in daylight. I am a bit anxious about putting the poppers in the pockets. I don't like piercing holes in fabric... so I made the hood first and I started assembling the sleeves. I am making flat felled seams, a bit of a faff to be honest but hopefully worth it.
Jack had his daily outing to the river. He loves swimming in the Kelvin just now and the kids were excited to tell me that he swam to the other side, climbed up the bank and waited for them to follow. They didn't. Eventually Jack swam back to his people. He is only little but such a strong swimmer.
I went for a run late in the afternoon. It is only my second run since my ear started improving and it was not enjoyable but I am glad I made the effort. I am on my third treatment course for my ear infection (after being overly optimistic in my last post). I remain optimistic. Of course my gut microbiome is a mess now and I need to make sure to feed it good stuff to help it recover. Plenty of fruit and vegetables and fibre and some living yogurt on my menu. Although of course the bag or ready salted crisps is much more tempting than some apples that have seen better days (back in October probably).
Our garden is very dry. It hasn't rained since lockdown started, which I think is five weeks ago. We are watering plants, very unusual for this time of year. My back garden tulips are starting to flower. I was very surprised to see the pastel colours, I was quite sure I planted vibrant varieties. My memory is not what it used to be.
Our dishwasher broke. Richard spent some time taking it apart and found a disconnected tube and plenty of water, which miraculously remained contained. I am cautiously optimistic that he fixed it. How the tube got disconnected remains a mystery. Sam broke our beloved Kenwood Chef glass mixing bowl. I was not happy. Richard fixed that, too but it may not be a permanent solution. These things cost a fortune. Now, Richard is flushing the central heating system to make sure it remains in good working order.
My favourite orchid is back in bloom. It is a bumper year, four flower spikes are competing for attention and three have just emerged from the base of the plant. It is very fragrant and fills the living room with a heavy sweet scent. Unfortunately, I lost the label and I can't remember what variety it is. I bought it many years ago at a local orchid fair. This would be the orchid fair weekend actually, such a shame to miss it. If you know the variety, please tell me.
I bumped into my friend Johnny the other day, while walking along the river. Obviously, I didn't bump into him literally. We had a good old chat, which was nice. It is both our birthdays shortly and maybe we'll arrange a family Zoom or something, instead of a BBQ. I miss a good chat with my friends. I like to stop and chat to people on our road, too. Everyone is outside on their front steps because it is a so sunny and warm and everyone feels a bit in need of a chat. Houses are built on the hill here and most have two sets of stairs to get to the front door. No risk of breaching the physical distancing guidelines, which is nice.
Right, I better get myself off the sofa and into the kitchen for a bit of cleaning. Thanks for stopping by and saying hello.
Hi Christina, it was enjoyable to see the colorful flowers and Jack having a nap in the sun. Good to read that the ear infection is getting better, if ever so slowly. Unfortunate about the kitchen mishaps with the dishwasher and bowl, but then things do happen and sure that Sam felt as bad as you did. We do favor certain kitchen items. All is as well as can be expected here and We continue to self isolate but look forward to warm days and outside walks.
ReplyDeletePerhaps we have been getting all of your precipitation. And wind. Much wind.
ReplyDeleteBut today looks different: sunny and up to 14C.
Such a joy to visit and see your beautiful photos. The contentment of your dear dog is a delight. The sun has been shining all week here too what a difference it makes. Although, sadly rain is forecast for tomorrow. Take care and stay safe.
ReplyDeleteLove your orchid I have a similar one but can’t remember it’s name. Hasn’t flowered yet this year but it has an amazing scent too. Might need to borrow your husband he sounds so useful. I’m sure I can find him a few jobs. Glad you are weathering the storm with all your crowd. Enjoy the sunshine. B x
ReplyDeleteReally looking forward to your new coat. It was your handmade duffle coat that got me entangled in your blog in the first place many moons ago! Our garden is so dry too. To think 8 weeks ago all of the roads to our town were cut off with floods. Who would be a farmer? Love Jo x
ReplyDeleteYour days sound productive yet moving at their own pace. I am so sorry you are still having trouble with your ear. I can't believe how long it has been and you are right you need to be eating all those good foods and taking a good probiotic. Our garden and grass were dry until yesterday when it rained all day, even in my house because we have a leak! Stay well.
ReplyDeleteWhat a neat orchid, I've never seen one like it. We had a few weeks of lovely weather and then now.. cool, grey and rainy. We planted 8 lettuces and I was worried they'd not grow due to the cold.. but they are! Stay safe! ((hugs)), Teresa :-)
ReplyDeleteI've also noticed that people are more sociable and want to chat to you; I think this is because we all have something in common now. On the whole people in our neighbourhood are remaining cheerful and hopeful. Our weather is also warm and sunny and we've not had any rain for weeks either. Take care and stay safe. Best, Jane x
ReplyDeleteLovely orchid, you've obviously looked after it well. I love the pink flowers as well and the tulips. I hope your ear is all better very soon, well done on getting back to running. Fermented vegetables are brilliant for the gut microbiome. I have the Shockeys' book 'Fermented Vegetables' which is really good. I was surprised how easy it is to ferment things, and not only are they good for the gut but it can help to release more nutrients from the food as well. You just basically rub in salt to break down the fibres and release some juice then pack it all tightly into a jar, cover to make sure the top layer isn't too exposed to the air and leave to ferment for a couple of weeks or so. I was a bit nervous of messing it up to start with, but it's fairly foolproof. I make kefir as well which is really easy. I have the routine of doing it every morning. I just take the kefir grains out of the kefir and put them in a new batch of whole milk and leave for 24 hours, by which time it's turned into kefir. Anyway, I hope you're all better soon and back to full strength. Hope you have a good Sunday. CJ xx
ReplyDeleteYour orchid is stunning, it's obviously very happy putting on such a display. We haven't had any rain here for weeks either but there's plenty coming up in the forecast, I don't want this sunny weather to end, it's been gorgeous.
ReplyDeleteI am hopeless at growing anything that flowers so I can't help you in identifying your beautiful orchid. I am sorry to hear that you ear is still not right, I do hope your third treatment is the one that works. I was going to write about fermented vegetables being good for your gut but I see that CJ has already said what I would have written!
ReplyDeleteLove that orchid Christina and it's scented too. Amused also that you had pastel tulips when you expected vibrant colours. I planted pastel and got some rogue yellows and oranges! The weather has broken here now and we've had the rain the garden needed. - now I want it to go away again. Sorry your ear has been so troublesome but looks like you have sorted it now. Xx Doris
