August ... ing

I hadn't quite finished with July but here I am, blundering into August at break-neck speed. Life has been predictably and pleasantly boring. My brain is on a mini summer hibernation. James and Alistair have one week of holiday left, the relief of them being occupied with learning just around the corner. When they used to be smaller, we would book them into week-long holiday camps but most local camps cater for younger children only. There is one outdoor adventure camp for older children but a £42 a day a child, not cheap (but probably barely covers the costs of running it). To be honest, some days I would probably pay double just to get them out of my hair for a while. Maybe treble. I know exactly how the person felt that sprayed the rude graffiti on a wall along the river. Seven weeks of school holidays

Eating courgettes. Lots of courgettes. Courgette fritters and frittata, spaghetti with courgette-pesto sauce, vegetable curry with courgette, quick pickled courgettes, courgette lasagna, vegetable stir fry with (yes, you guess right) courgettes. You name it, I've eaten it. There is more to come. I don't mind, such a versatile fruit.

Taking the plunge and buying a new sewing machine. It is an investment machine, one that should last me until such a time when I can no longer use it. Let hope that this is in the very distant future.

Of course, testing my new sewing machine. It doesn't eat fabric and it cuts thread efficiently. I no longer need to pull out a tail of thread to start the next piece of sewing, holding it tight so the fabric doesn't get sucked in. A true thread saver that, particularly when piecing a quilt. I am also swearing less.

Piecing Annie's leaving home quilt. I am a bit in a rush, her moving date is September 4th. I don't like sewing under pressure but I spent too long procrastinating and now I am in a rush. The pattern is fiendish, although it does look rather simple.

Replacing the neckband of my white t-shirt with one that is not stained by sun block lotion. I make that mistake every year, wearing a white t-shirt on sun cream.

Celebrating Annie's new driving licence. She has been busy getting practice without an experienced co-pilot ever since and has clocked up plenty of miles.

Commiserating with Sam and his intern colleagues. They are all self-isolating at home, after spending some care- and no doubt mask-free time together. Sam has to delay his second jag because he can't travel to Scotland for his appointment.

Loving the first bunch of sun flowers this late summer.

Selecting hardy perennials to fill a few holes in the garden and to address the lack of July flowers. It is a good time to buy perennials. As they come to the end of their flowering period, the plants are available at a reduced price.

Wondering if I get to pick a few of the hazelnuts growing along the river. The squirrels beat me to it every year but maybe I am lucky this year.

Reading "Love after Love" by Ingrid Persaud.

Listening to "Song of the Dead" by Douglas Lindsay. I am also listening to my own voice. It is the time of year to update lecture materials.

Thinking of all the blog posts I could write about garments that I made this summer. What holds me back is the modelling and taking decent photographs. I always feel a bit self conscious twirling around the garden with the camera mounted on the tripod.

Meeting a friend for coffee. We haven't seen each other since March last year, so lovely to finally catch-up on each other's news.

What is happening in your lives? Do tell 🙂. Thanks for visiting.

  1. I've just realised we have only three weeks of holiday left. It's gone really fast for us so far, but I understand how difficult it can be to occupy the busy minds of children at a certain age. X

  2. I know what you mean about the length of the summer hols. Five weeks still to go here I think :) I am being guilt-tripped about not taking the youngest here, there and everywhere, but I have a stack of work to get through. Lovely new sewing machine, I hope you will be very happy together, no doubt you will make lots of beautiful things. There are loads of hazel trees along by the stream here, but I've felt there's a real shortage of nuts this year. The squirrels always strip them very early on without waiting for any ripening. This year I really can't see many nuts on the trees. A squirrel did drop a bunch of shells on the dog the other day which was funny though. I was standing underneath watching the squirrel open them all up and when he'd finished he dropped the cases down. Hope you have a good week. CJ xx

  4. It must have been so nice to see your friend again. I know I enjoyed seeing my friend at the weekend too.
Have lots of fun time with your new sewing machine. I have a Janome too but it is fairly basic. It suits my baby skills on it for the moment though.
Not sure what this week holds probably fairly unevenful Mon to Fri but might try and get out again for another adventure at the weekend weather permitting x

  5. I know that feeling of another month arriving before I’m finished with the last one. Your photos are definitely autumnal, I’m beginning to feel it in the air. I quite like it. Loving the new sewing machine. I dare say it will get lots of use and I would love to see all the things you have made recently. Glad Annie is now independently driving and I’m sure she has her uses as taxi service. Enjoy the rest of the holidays and good luck with the nut picking. B x

  6. We are heading back to school this week and I am not happy about it, either is a little boy I know. So much anxiety swirling around the house right now. Good luck to Annie and Sam.

  7. My goodness, is that what sewing machines are like now? We have two in the basement that never get used. One was my mother's and dates from the 50s. The other, my wife's from the 70s. For some reason, we brought them with us on a big move across province in '05. My mother had a tread one until she was given that one in the 50s.

  9. We have been having a rather nice summer interspersed with day trips and visits to see family in differing states. Of course, we would have liked to be traveling a bit further but are thankful to be able to get out and about. We will celebrate our anniversary next week with several days in different parts of New Hampshire and Vermont. And, in Sept, we will spend time in Rhode Island, and Pennsylvania. In between travels, we are doing a lot of reading and online streaming as a BritBox subscription was recently purchased.

  10. It is strange how I thought older children would make for an easier holiday but they are all done with playing it seems. They used to make pop-up shops, colour in, dress up, play outside but now they are older the play has gone and they are very stationary and keep asking me what they are doing each day. Sigh! You sewing machine looks fab, such a big opening for getting quilts through. Enjoy!!! Ps. Go on, get your camera out and show us your makes. Jo x
