to juice or not to juice

My life lesson for this first full week of 2022 is that pomegranate juicing is best left to industrial partners. I know because I tried it. I juiced two pomegranates because I fancied some juice. Do not try this in your kitchen, particularly if it is painted white.

We are settling back into the routine of school and work, patiently awaiting our turn to be infected with Covid-19. People are testing positive all around us but nobody we know has been seriously sick so far. James already had a possible exposure on the first day back at school. Alistair's best friend and his family are all unwell. We are as vaccinated as possible and we are hopefully protected from serious disease. Sam left for York on Monday. Annie hoofed it to St. Andrews on Thursday before we turn into a plague hotel. Not on foot I should say, but with our car. We have no transport other than bikes for a couple of weeks.

James and Alistair had an orthodontist appointment. Richard, my role model of a husband cycled with them along the canal, the river and through Kelvingrove Park to get there on time. Did I mention that the weather is terrible? He left them to go in on their own as instructed by the text we had received. Then they all cycled back through the rain. The boys were unable to to remember if any decisions were made regarding treatment of overbites and wonky garden fence dentition. The orthodontist didn't call as they said he would. I now wonder if the instructions to come unaccompanied was maybe a standard message for adults? We may never know.

I made Lebkuchen. It is very delicious and I am glad I only made half a portion because I am planning to eat it all up this weekend. It also leaves me with enough of the seasonal spice mix to make another batch. My mum brought me it at Christmas. A perfect gift.

It snowed on Thursday night. The snow disappeared as quickly as it arrived, except of course on the pavements and footpaths along the canal and river. There, it absorbed lots of rain and then froze over. Best to walk the dog on ambulance accessible paths only until the ice is completely melted.

I have no photos this week because it is not much fun taking out the camera or phone when there is limited light and heavy rain. Instead I am sharing photos of the two quilts I completed this year.  Aren't they gorgeous?

Thanks for visiting 😋

  1. The quilts are lovely! We’ve had snow this past week which gave me three much wanted days off from work. I know I just had two weeks off for winter break. It’s like that time never existed. To say the fall semester was trying is an understatement. I won’t go down that rabbit hole. I’ll be joining you in the wait for my turn to be infected with Covid. I’m fully boosted and hope it will be mild when I do get it.

  2. Thankfully we have had sunshine even though it has been bitterly cold but at least light makes you feel like doing things. The two weeks before Christmas were so dreary. I love your quilts and your endeavour to get the the dentist! xxxx

  3. Those quilts are fabulous!
Solid ice on our driveway and local roads today so a good day to stay home and read! Yay!

  4. So far, nobody I know has caught it, except I guess for one very distant very extended family member. If I have to get it, I hope it is when the medical system isn’t overwhelmed.

  5. Love the quilts, so cheery on a January day and those willing or not so willing quilt holders make me smile. Bless them !!

  6. Oh yes, gorgeous indeed. I am determined to start a quilt this year. I have ordered a bit of fabric, but am now doubting my choices and wishing I had chosen something else. But I am so indecisive I was trying to just pick something and get going. I might try and cancel the order tomorrow... My urchins are terrible at passing on what they have been told about stuff. They just look vague. Hope you have a good week. Well done all on the cycling. CJ xx

  9. Biking in the rain.. wow..
Here parents or caregivers are always allowed to accompany the patient.
    Love both quilts.. beautifully made.

  10. Your quilts are beautiful. The cycle ride in the rain sounds pretty hideous. I hope you get to the bottom of what was discussed at the appointment, seems a little ridiculous that the boys were expected to attend without an adult.

Pomegranate leaves an interesting trail of destruction when you peel it, along with beetroot, I can only imagine the mess you could make whilst juicing!

  11. Gorgeous quilts. Know exactly what you mean about waiting to catch Covid. Kate is still at living home and now back on teaching practice surrounded by 5-7 year olds. She had Covid before Christmas and has just had her booster but I’m not entirely confident she won’t catch it again and give it to us. Roll on springtime - I check on the progress of my bulbs every day!

  12. No one wants to take photos in nasty weather, Christina, so you are not alone. We have known friends who were vaccinated and caught “it” but they did not require a hospital visit and have since recovered. Our dentist is close enough for a walk. The quilts are lovely. I have a podcast recommendation it’s Soul Music from the BBC.

  13. Your quilts are works of art, I agree it is not as inspiring to take photos while it is dull like it has been. Have a good week. x

  14. They are spectacular! I hope everyone in your family stays healthy. The bicycling is such good exercise. I plan to ride mine with my dogs this afternoon.
