never a dull moment

Pippin the cat collapsed on Thursday late morning, mewling, breathing laboured. We weren't sure where she had come from or where she had been but she was not a well cat. Our vet was able to see her immediately so Richard and I bundled her up carefully and drove her to the practice. It was scary. After a first check-up, we were sent home to await further news. It was a tense couple of hours. Pippin was severely hypothermic, dehydrated, and open mouth breathing which apparently is a bad sign but Amy the vet stabilised her and started to warm her up gently. She had no obvious injuries although her back right leg was clearly painful. Come evening, she had recovered a little but was not well enough to come home. She was referred to the small animal hospital for overnight care. She was lethargic on the way there but she did a little purring when I stroked while we were waiting to be admitted. I went home, reassured that she would be well looked after. The next morning, her temperature was closer to normal but she needed to finish her bag of fluids and was discharged back to the vet. Finally, late on Friday afternoon, she was allowed home, with a bottle of anti-inflammatories and some nutritional supplements. We don't know what happened to Pippin. She had a full physical examination, a whole body x-ray, ultrasounds and blood tests, nothing of concern was found apart from anaemia, which apparently wasn't new. She must have been trapped outside in the cold somewhere and the hypothermia maybe caused her collapse. Pippin nearly died, which was scary. Thank goodness we were working at home and could take care of her. She pulled through and is now recovering, under house arrest until further notice.

On the way to the day vet with Pippin I killed a pigeon. It was scavenging chips on the road and didn't notice I was approaching. The woman behind me in her pretentious SUV was on a mission of utter urgency, driving so close I couldn't see her front lights and I didn't dare breaking abruptly. I makes me feel sick just thinking about it but I hope at least the chips were worth it.

In other news, Alistair's ankle is much better and he is no longer in great pain. All males in the house are off to on a three day half term trip. Lupin (the incontinent cat) is still peeing on the floor but less frequently so. Life rocks.

Thanks for visiting 🙂

  1. Oh my gosh. That's a lot! I'm glad that you were there to rescue Pippin, Lupin is peeing less on the floor, and that Alistair is improving. Here's hoping for a calmer week!

  4. Sending hugs we are familiar with the never a dull moment situation round here and it isn’t fun. Glad to hear that Alistair is improving but what a worry for you all about Pippin 😕. Urgh sorry about the aggressive driver that was the last thing you needed, hope life settles down xx

  5. Poor Pippin, I hope she is back to full strength very soon. And poor you, having to deal with it all. Annoying woman in the SUV, sorry you were forced to hit the pigeon. I'm glad Alistair's ankle is on the mend. Life is full-on sometimes isn't it. My brain is really quite confused with everything at the moment which is of course hugely entertaining for the children. Hope you have a good week and that things are all on the up. CJ xx

  7. It sounds like you have had quite a week. I do hope that Pippin continues to improve, it sounds like it was all very worrying for a moment. I am glad to hear that Alistair continues to improve and is no longer in pain. The SUV driver sounds very aggressive, not a good experience, I hope it is is your last. Here's to a gentler week for you all.

  8. What a nightmare. Poor Pippin and poor you. Glad things are looking up now though.
I hate it when drivers are so close behind like that.
Hope the lads enjoy their time away and you get to recharge your batteries too. Have a safe and happy week x

  10. Good news to read about Pippin, but not so much about Lupin. Hope recovery continues to go well. Pets can be as worrisome as children many times. Enjoy your weekend with just you and the ies at home.

  11. Poor Pippin, if only our pets could tell us the whole story. Beano has had a abcess on his paw this week from grass seeds which I thought I had removed last week so I feel your pet anxiety. Wish you could have a cuppa with me in my studio. Jo xxxx

  12. Oh, I am glad that Pippin is doing well, and I would have been distressed by the pigeon too, but it really should have been more careful where it ate its chips. Hope you enjoy your three days of quiet while your boys do their thing! xx
