10 days into June

Ten days into June as I start typing this post (it might take days to complete it). It has been an exhausting month so far and I really want to sleep for about 24 hours.

Alistair caught the worst gastroenteritis ever, accompanied by a persistent high fever. He was off school for a whole week, just returned tentatively on Friday, with a supply of Immodium and Buscopan (just in case).

Lupin the cat went off her food about two weeks ago and after trying different types of food, it was clear she had not turned suddenly fussy. I took her to the vet, where she was examined and had some bloods taken. I was astonished to learn how much weight she had lost. How did we not notice? I turns out she has severe kidney disease. She was admitted to hospital for IV fluid treatment for three days. She responded well and is eating again but she is on borrowed time. For now she seems happy enough.

At work, I am in full marking mode. Some excellent pieces of writing but unfortunately also some dismal ones that make me question my teaching skills. Or maybe the admissions criteria.

On to the good news. Sam got his final grades back, despite widespread marking boycotts in academia. He got a First Class Honours in software engineering!! I think this warrants two exclamation marks, maybe even three. I am so proud, my first child to graduate and graduate with a First. I'll be such a mess at his Graduation ceremony. And there is more reason to celebrate because Sam also has a job.

I needed new glasses with a stronger prescription. Oh the joys of an aging body. I almost got the same frame that I already have because I like it but then I tried a few other frames on and found one that I liked more. I got prescription sunglasses, too. Now I'll be able to sit in the sun and read or knit and not look like an idiot with glasses plus oversized sunglasses. My optician mentioned that I could get special make-up glasses, like readers but with lenses that fold down. It is tempting. He's ordered a few in for me to try.

With volunteering cancelled this weekend, I spent a quiet Saturday pottering around the house, taking a walk to the yarn shop and sitting in the garden stitching binding to Eadie's quilt. I am on track to finish it for her birthday. I baked a Victoria sponge for tomorrow and Richard made a lovely dinner of baked salmon wrapped in parma ham, asparagus and new potatoes, and the first artichoke from the garden. In a few minutes, I am going to cut out fabric for a wee blouse. The days are long, which I love.

Thanks for visiting 🙂

  2. Poor Alistair (sounds, erm, messy). Poor Lupin (aged dog with multiple medical problems and held together with sellotape here). Well done on all the marking (I well remember the ups and downs of that) and huge congratulations to your boy.

  5. Congratulations to Sam. Maybe your students who aren't writing well aren't reading books. There is so much junk on the Internet. People here keep saying "There's" when it should be "There are." They do it on the news and radio...

  7. I do hope Alistair is feeling much better now. These things do have a habit of lingering.
And I'm sorry to hear about lovely Lupin. I'm glad she is at least happy and comfortable. X

  8. Poor cat and glad Alistair is feeling better, a violent stomache upset is very debilitating.
