Eadies quilt

I finished Eadie's leaving home quilt. I wanted to give it to her for the start of university last year but didn't finish in time. Eadie, by the way is not an as yet undisclosed child of ours but the daughter of a wonderful friend.

Eadie liked it. I was secretly hoping she would not so that I can keep it for myself. It was hard to let it go.

I dug deep into my fabric stash for this quilt using just about everything I had at hand, including someone else's remnants that I purchased ages ago. I made myself use colours in my stash that I didn't like so much because I knew it would make for a more balanced whole. I am glad I did but can I just say it didn't feel good to pull those weird colours and prints.

My favourite kind of quilt is a scrappy quilt. For this one, I cut strips of 6 cm width into 10 cm pieces. Then I chose a lighter and a darker stack of fabrics and sewed them together along the long side, alternating the two prints, until I ran out. When I reached the end of a row, I started a new one with the same fabrics that ended the last row but making sure I inverted lighter with darker fabric. Does this make sense?  The photographs might help.

I used a bamboo, silk and cotton wadding because it somehow adjusts to the seasons, it is cool in summer and warm in winter. It also washes well.

I quilted along the seams. I did this twice actually. The first time round I forgot to use the walking foot and although I noticed some bunching I stubbornly continued until all the lines were done. I then shoved the quilt in a corner because I was annoyed with it and myself. After a few weeks, I started unpicking. This took many days and I can still find pieces of thread in random parts of the house, such was the mess. As I had already removed all the curved pins to hold the three layers together, I had to sandwich the quilt again.... But it was absolutely worth every minute.

I used a plain grey bedsheet as backing and blue chambray fabric remnants for the binding to frame the colourful top.

What do you think? Should I now go ahead and make a similar quilt for myself?

Thanks for visiting 😊

  3. I love your quilt! Scrap quilts, especially made with squares / rectangles, are my favourites. Do make yourself one, you will be thankful on those cold winter mornings snuggling under it with a warm cuppa. Love your blog Christina.

  6. Beautiful! So is that red hair! As for making one for yourself, I am finish a second scrap quilt made because I loved the first one so much - didn't have exactly the same fabrics, you can imagine, the second one is turning out kind of meh. Probably shouldn't have expected to love #2 as much.

  10. What a glorious quilt , I can well imagine wanting to keep it after all that hard work. I too have a quilt put away waiting for me to unpick the bunched up quilting stitches. I’m off to research walking feet something I clearly should have used! B x

  13. my god you are awesome
    It's a gem.
    What wonderful colors.
And yes, mistakes tend to happen when you want to finish meticulously and only the will drives you forward and love has already gone to sleep... put it away... that's how I do it... to then bring it out again and fix it. But then you feel good.
You have created a beautiful piece and yes, make another one for yourself...
    Much love from Viola
    Thanks for the photos.
