January ramblings

How is your January going? Mine is flying by!

I have deleted my Facebook account. Next will be my Instagram account but this will be more difficult. Not technically, don‘t get me wrong, but emotionally. I quite like scrolling through random posts, and I like to see what friends are up to. On the other hand, I was lured into buying stuff I don’t need but absolutely wanted. Like „the only portable charger you‘ll ever need“, or „make-up for mature skin“ and „the best crossbody bag for your travels“ (buy one get one free). Yes, I know. All of these things arrived from overseas even though I checked they would be despatched from the UK. I am using everything, in fact quite like the crossbody bags but they are just ordinary crossbody bags and  the charger was definitely not worth the money. The power of advertising. The final Meta application will be more difficult to let go.  WhatApp is very convenient. Work two factor authentication now comes through to WhatsApp, which annoys me.The hypocritical me will probably continue to use it for a while at least. At least it is not full of inane ads and posts from people I don’t know. I have removed myself from the Twitter. No regrets there. I migrated to Bluesky a while ago, which makes a pleasant change from other social media platforms. No ads and no megalomaniac owner. I am conflicted with stuff like that. We also have an Amazon Prime family account. And I am fairly certain that we have some Cheerios in the cupboard.

Moving on swiftly.

Alistair put in five college applications for joinery/carpentry and general construction training. The applications went in as soon as they opened but two courses are already full… fingers crossed. One of the charities supporting young people at school has organised a work experience placement for him, on a construction site, every Monday from the end of January until June. I am happy to have a budding trade‘s man. The  very same young man had his hair died a bright red. I call it rebel red. He looks awesome. James meanwhile shows no sign of wanting to grow up and get a job or any qualifications. Sadly, he is hanging out with the wrong crowd, which is reflected in his behaviour at home and school. I am a bit sick of it. We all are. Except the dog who can’t tell the difference.

The big freeze is over. It is now just damp and cold. For some unclear reason I recently bought a pair of gorgeous white leather Kickers traininers. I know, what was I thinking? But I love them so much! This is my third pair of white trainers… there is something about white trainers that I just can‘t resist. I am otherwise rather sensible with my wardrobe choices. The oldest pair is in tatters, the middle pair not far behind but still ok to wear for rainy walks. I like comfortable shoes. I still have a pair of Kickers Mary-Janes and a pair of chunky Doctor Martens high heels. Plus Birkenstock sandals and two pairs of walking boots.

Alistair and I went volunteering together, it was fun. Woodland restoration is going to keep us busy for a few week. Alistair was deligthed to be allowed to cut down sizeable saplings that were encroaching on a more mature trees. He left at lunchtime but it was good to get him outside for a couple of hours. There is always so much to do! Next time we‘ll get the hard hats on an the big tools for some birch thinning. I guess it is like thinning out the carrots to allow the strongest to grow big and strong. For lunch we sat on a fallen tree watching  birds. Somebody had set up bird feeders on a clearing. Even the ring-necked parakeets made and appearance, and a few nuthatches, too. I guiltily enjoy watching the parakeets, they are very handsome birds but an invasive species. You have to admire them for their adapatability, considering they are native to India.

Not much else to report, life is ticking along nicely, if a bit quickly. Thanks for visiting 😊

  1. I need an FB account for local groups and family messaging, but I won't use it often otherwise. I haven't deleted Twitter either, but just drop by when I am loose ends. So, your spring flowers are already appearing? It always surprises me. It will be April for us. Are these parakeets, budgies, or a bigger species?

  2. Blogging is my only form of social media interaction . As you know, I have enjoyed WhatsApp especially when traveling and then keeping in contact with friends afterwards. Good for Alistair on the applications and the work experience should be invaluable. Nice to have him accompany you for the woodland restoration.

  3. I don't have social media although I obviously enjoy blogging with everyone. Good luck to Alistair with his applications and work experience and who doesn't have a soft spot for rebel red? I hope James manages to get himself in a more positive place eventually too. Lunch and watching the birds - another lovely moment with Alistair. Enjoy the rest of your week, Christina.

  4. I need Facebook as I run the local Knit & Natter Facebook group, also I help run the church Facebook page eg I put up adverts for Wednesday coffee morning, Mondays craft circle (Knit & Natter), Mon & Tuesday chair exercise. I photograph the church flowers and add them on Thursdays.
I love instagram but can't really cope with blogging and instagram. It's good for finding like minded people but tbh I find some posts too long! They are more suited to blog posts.
I hope things improve with James. Take care x

  5. Ah, you've left Facebook, just as I registered :) If I'm being completely honest, I only signed up so that I could read some gossip on a particular local area post. I can see how easy it would be to disappear down various rabbit holes, so I think I'll probably delete it (before I forget that i even have it), as I really don't think it's for me. I will keep my Instagram account, for the time being, and I've never even looked at Twitter.
I hope the situation with James improves soon. It's never easy when one individual's behaviour can have such an impact on the whole family. Xx

  6. I joined Facebook years ago when my daughter in law suggested i join. She is from a large family and she had created a small private sub group and It was a way of me keeping up with what was happening. I stayed on it when the neighbourhood they live in and where I would go daily to babysit, started a neighbourhood facebook page with news of break ins, people finding lost items local happenings etc. Now I find it useful because a local seniors group has started posting coffee morning dates and information for seniors.. The West Highland Way has a facebook page, and I daydream of walking the route, and enjoy peoples posts who are planning to walk it. Jean in Winnipeg

  7. Nuthatches, how lovely. And well done Alistair on the woodland work. My youngest did some work experience at the wetlands place and loved it. He would have gone to work there straightaway if he could I think. Hurray for gorgeous new shoes! They'll be wonderful once the mud clears up. Good luck to Alistair with the college applications, I hope he gets a course he enjoys. CJ xx

  8. We were on a warm holiday for a couple of weeks this month, so my January seems much shorter too. As for social media...deleted twitter when Elon Musk bought it and I've never had a FB or Instagram account. Leaving Twitter was a massive mental health boost.
    Keep ticking.

  9. Lovely news about Alistair. Our son is a joiner (self employed) and Pip our youngest is looking at either plumbing/heating or electrical engineering at college for hopefully a September start. We have two open days coming up in March.

One of our older crew got in with an unsavoury crowd and it was a very tough time for all of us, so my heart goes out to you. They do come good though and this lass went from strength to strength once she found her direction and hasn’t looked back. She now is the North West Health and Safety Lead for a mental health and drug/alcohol recovery charity. Sharing in case it offers you a bit of hope 🩷

I’m dithering about social media especially IG as I’ve friends within the chronic illness community over there but I am sick of seeing stuff I’m not remotely interested in! So I try and reduce my time by only checking in on ‘friends’ and then switching off.

Your volunteering sounds just the thing to brighten January days xxx
