gloomy mornings
October is shaping up to be a little more restful than September but maybe I should rush and find a piece of wood to touch because ... tempting fate and all. It is also early days and a lot can still happen.
I’ve harvested all the quince and Richard took care of the apples. We have so many apples that he put a whole load in a box on our front steps with a note to take an apple or two, or many. I wanted to leave the quince on the tree for longer but storm Amy put an end to this. I didn’t weigh the harvest yet but definitely plenty for a good supply of quince jelly. The quince are sitting in the cool porch for now, the fragrance is divine and stronger than that of the smelly teenage trainers.
I am sewing a pair of wide leg denims at the moment, 20 minutes at the time. It always amazes me how much gets done in just 20 minutes. It goes something like this: On Monday I attached the pockets to the front pieces. On Tuesday I started the zip insertion, finished on Wednesday. On Thursday I attached the back yoke pieces and the back pockets. On Friday I was too knackered to do anything but then on Saturday, I basted the main pieces together to check for fit. This was excellent and I unpicked the whole lot again to start assembling the denims properly. See, 20 minutes a day goes a long way.
In the process of finishing seams, I had a bit of an argument with my overlocker. It has been acting up, not trimming the raw fabric edges properly. I decided that the overlocker knife needed replacing and all came to a stop. It was easy enough but somehow, in the process, I managed to jam the machine. I ignored it for a bit, cleaning the machine thoroughly. So much lint. Then I slammed the moveable parts shut. As if by magic, the overlocker unjammed. Unfortunately I broke a needle in the process and didn’t have a replacement.... I'll spare you the details of my arduous journey across town on the Sunday of the Great Scottish Run, in search of a replacement needle.
Autumn is properly here, gloomy and wet. We seem to have skipped the glorious early autumn days altogether. I don't the darker mornings, waking up is more difficult. The heating is on in principle, with all but two radiators still in the summer position. One in the bathroom (nobody loves smelly towels) and in my little office (because I am worth it).
There is nothing much else to report. Thanks for visiting 😊
